GEORGE VAN HARPER
Quartermaster, United States Navy. Son of Dr. and Mrs. G. M. Harper, 2002 South Fifth street, Springfield. Born November 28, 1899, in St. Marie. Entered service December 1, 1916, in Terre Haute, Ind. Received his training at Great Lakes Naval Station. When war was declared, he was placed on board the U. S. S. South Carolina, where he served as gun- pointer for two years. Was in Hampton Roads, Va., when the Armis- tice was signed. The U. S. S. South Carolina was converted into a transport, bringing many troops back from France. Released from service October 28, 1919, at Norfolk, Va.
