COMPANY I, 370TH INFANTRY, 93RD DIVISION.

Company I, 370th Infantry, 93rd Division, was originally Company I of the Old Eighth Illinois (Colored) Infantry. When the Illinois National Guard regi- ment was federalized, the organization was transferred to Camp Logan, Houston, Texas, and assigned to the 93rd Division.

Company I was composed almost wholly of Springfield and Sangamon County men. They remained at Camp Logan until the spring of 1918, and sailed overseas April 6, 1918, on the U. S. S. President Grant.

The record made by these men was one of which Sangamon County is justly proud. Colonel Thomas Roberts, commanding the 370th Infantry, and the only white officer in the command, said: "No harder and braver fighting was done anywhere than that of iny men. I am proud to have commanded them."

Company I men were in action at Soissons, St. Mihiel, Mon Sec, and the Oise-Aisne Offensive. They were in action when the Armistice was signed. Returning to the United States the first of the year 1919, they were discharged at Camp Grant, Illinois, in February, 1919.
