Santa Rosa, SONOMA COUNTY,
Santa Rosa, the county seat of Sono- ma county, contains a population of about 5,000. The town was laid out by
associates in 1852, on the north side of Santa Rosa creek, and about two miles from the foothills. To the south, west aud north lie the splendid valleys of Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Russian riv- er, unexcelled for productiveness in the State, and filled with a prosperous popu- lation. The climate is mild and equa- ble, and the soil produces crops every year -- the dry seasons being the best in this valley. The public schools have two commodious buildings, with a nu- merous corps of ; teachers. There are also two fine collegiate buildings, eight churches, one foundry and machine shop, one first-class woolen mill, two tanneries, two flouring mills, one planing mill, and numerous carriage and smith shops. De Turks' winery and dis- tillery, one of the largest on the coast, is located here, and crushes over one thousand tons of grapes yearly. There are other wineries in the neighborhood, which are noted for their large production of grapes. The "Santa Rosa Republi- can, " the "Sonoma Democrat, " and the "Daily Republican," newspapers, are published here. The plaza is one of the finest in the State, and the location of the city is unexcelled for beauty. Its main trade is derived from the vineyard and agricultural interests of the locality.
