'Travellers and tourists of the highest authority have pronounced this to be one of the richest scenic sections of the globe. With the charms of nature spread out in so many ways to make Arizona attractive, there ean be no doubt that in a short time this quarter of our happy nation will be populated by her representa- tive citizens, under whose care and nurture it must become a great source of pride and revenue. At no distant day every section of Arizona, it is presumed, wul ba awakened by the clanking of engines and the bastle of traffic. This wilderness will have undergone a change as if by magic; its stillness will have been broken by the joyous sounds of the church bells ringing out upon the balmy air, and the musical sounds of the mechanic will keep "time " with the progress of civiliza- tion.

MARICOPA COUNTY.
Phoenix, the county seat of Maricops county, is located in north latitude 33 deg. 18 min. and longitude 112 deg, time two hours and twenty minutes slower than Washington. It is located two miles north of Salt river, in the center of the valley of the same name, and has been the seat of government since the for- mation of the county, Feb 4, 1871. The town site of Phoenix covers an area one mile long and one-half mile wide. It was surveyed in the latter part of 1870. The streets fronting on the plaza are 100 feet wide, the balance are 80. The streets run at right angles with the car- dinal points of the compass. The blocks are 300 feet square. Owing to its close proximity to the best developed mining districts in the Territory, its location as a base of supplies is unequaled. Over 5,000,000 pounds of flour was manufac- tured here during the present season. The town is amply supplied with churches and educational facilities, a
handsome new school house costing $15,- 000 has just been completed. The Ma- sons, Odd Fellows, Red Men and Good- Templars are organized, and have large lists of members.
