At an early day in its history it was the county seat, but with the establishment of Pendle- ton, 50 miles distant, and the with- drawal of trade and population conse- quent on the failure of the mines it soon diminished, and what was once an active bustling town, there remains an almost "deserted village." It is still a point, however, to which large consignments of freight are made.
