Is the northern terminus of the Nevada County Narrow-Gauge Railroad, 22 miles from Colfax, on the Central Pacific Railway. It is thecounty seat, and has a population of 3,500. Its mines are the chief source of support, from which se- veral hundred thousand dollars in ore are taken and crushed annually. The country surrounding the place is quite productive of fruits and grapes, while its scenic features are numerous. It is surrounded by high, abrupt hills, and in the Spring time, when they don their suit of green, it presents a romantic ap- pearance. The Court House is a very pretty structure, costing $75,000. The High School building is quite an orna- ment, and cost $15,000. There is a bank, with a paid-up cash capital of $30,000. 'The residences are above the average of places of the same size, the streets are cleanly kept, and the places of trade are well built." There are several breweries, two foundries and several other places of manufacture. The people are hospitable, enterprising and intelli. gent, and the sanitary condition of the place is excellent.
