College of Notre Dame, SAN JOSE, CAL.

This Institution is under the Superintendence of the Sisters of Notre Dame, whose primary object is to instill into the minds of young girls a noble and laudable emulation, to form their hearts in virtue, to fit then to be future ornaments to society.

THE college was founded in 1851. In 1855 it was incorporated by the State Legislature, and subsequently the same body so extended the original charter as to confer all the rights and privileges of collegiate institutions in the United States. It is situated in the City of San Jose, Santa Clara County, and is surrounded by a beautiful and extensive play ground, furnished with every facility for the amusement of the pupils. The building, of brick, is large, commodious, and well ventilated. The entire front is one hundred and sixty feet long. The east wing runs back to the depth of two hundred and fifty feet; the west wing is one hundred and three feet deep; the whole affording accommodations for a large number of pupils.
