Is a city of 5,000 inhabitants, the capita of Montana Territory, and the county seat of Lewis and Clarke county. Like most places in the far West, its early history was fraught with tragie features, crime and corruption stalking hand in hand through the streets, day after day, in most formidable array ; but when, in 1865, the formation of the organization which will be distinctly remembered as. the Vigilance Committee, was effected, vandalism and other crimes became "beautifully less," to the delight of her law-abiding and peace-loving citizens. When the place first took its name it was known as St. Helena, named so be- cause of its striking resemblance to the place which acquired an undying fame through the possession of Napoleon. It was concluded, shortly after the event of its christening, at a meeting held at a log cabin, to drop the first part of the word and leave it as it now is.

The city has had a great many obsta- cles in the form of various elements to surmount in her pathway to develop- ment. In 1869 a great fire, news of which was telegraphed throughout the world, occurred, destroying nearly the whole city. Another equally as dlc- structive occurred in 1872, and another still in 1874. Despite the fate which promised destruction in a baptism of fire, the brave citizens went to work and have again rebuilt the city, and it is to be hoped that they may not be call- ed upon again to pass through a fiery ordeal of such magnitude. The city is

It has communication with adjacent towns by stage routes, one leading through the Bitter Root Valley, and one to Helena and Deer Lodge City. It will also soon have connection with the Utah North- ern Railway by stage line, as there is one under process of construction to the ter- minus of that road. The means which contribute to the development of a min- ing and agricultural section will result in its steady growth.
