A library of carefully selected works, adapted to the age and capacity of the pupils, insures excellent reading matter for spare hours, thus rendering even re- laxation conducive to mental culture. Plain and useful needlework are consid- ered indispensable ; but, at each one's selection, pupils may take lessons in all kinds of fancy work, including hair and wax flowers, and any other. The scho- lastic year is of two sessions: from the first of August to Christmas, and from the first of January to June, exclusive. The course of instruction, which em- braces the elementary as well as the higher departments of education, com- prises all the branches taught in the best academies for young ladies. The sawmills of Eureka are of an aggregate capacity of 280,000 feet of lumber daily, though not at present working to their utmost. Until recently the shipments of lumber from Humboldt have averaged 70,000,000 feet per year; but from vari- ous causes this important industry has diminished, only to resume its former standing when the state of society in California is more reassuring.
