Montana is conceded to be by eminent authority second to none as a stock-rais- ing region, although experiments, it is true, in this direction have been somewhat limited ; yet, enough has been done to satisfy good judges conclusively that her standing is unassailable. The lands are all open to entry and actual settlers should bear in mind the importance attached to a speedy location in this El Do- rado. It is to be regretted that the nature of this work is such that anything more than a brief notice of the attractive features is rendered impossible. There is sufficient material to fill a volume of no mean proportions.

Malarial diseases or epidemics are never known, while the winters generally are exceedingly mild.

Butte City, DEER LODGE COUNTY,

The second city of importance of the Territory, is situated on the slope above Summit Valley, seven miles above Silver Bow. Like most places of the pioneer days, it presented scenes of great activity and depression alternately ; and it was not until the year of our Lord 1875 that a permanent growth in the place was begun. The discovery of rich lodes in January of that year, and the introdue- tion of sufficient capital towarrant their development to their greatest capacity, cust the glorious sunlight of a perma- nent and gradual improvement over the place, and it now has a population of 3,000 souls. With improved facilities for transportation, and an ontlet by rail to the Union Pacific, she must be- come a city of no little importance. Her schools are good, the society is ex- cellent, and the health is remarkably fine. No malarial, no pulmonary bronchial discases are ever recorded in this locality.

Glendale, BEAVER HEAD COUNTY,

Is a lively mining camp in the southwest- ern portion of the Territory, having communication with the adjacent places by the well-known stage line of Gilmer & Salisbury. It did not attract a great deal of attention until its importance as an ore-shipping point became known, when it rapidly climbed the ladder of notoriety, and in a very short time gazed upon quite an array of money-seeking population. The mines in the vicinity of the place are producing an abundance of bullion, and giveemployment to quite an army of mon and a great deal of ma- chinery. Vory costly furnaces have been erected. The population of the place is about 1,500 persons.
