WAS the twenty-third State admitted to the Union under the Constitution, and is situated between latitude 35° and 42º north and longitude 114° and 120° west, having an area of 104,125 square miles, being third in extent of territory, Texas and California preceding her in the rank of dimension. . It is bounded on the north by Oregon and Idaho, on the east by Utah and Arizona and on the south and west by California. Its counties are necessarily large, the number being only 14, and the population is variously estimated to be from 60,000 to 75,000, which is decidedly cosmopolitan, Americans predominating largely. The general surface is a table land, with an altitude of 4,500 feet above the sea, traversed with great uniformity by nearly parallel ranges of mountains rising from 1,000 to 8,000 feet higher. These ranges have for the most part a north and south direction, and are separated by valleys from five to twenty miles wide, the bases of the mountains hav- ing also about the same width. The mountains are frequently intersected by ravines, which form easy passes, and in some places are broken into confused and detached masses. The valleys sometimes extend more than 100 miles, uninterrupted, ex- cept by an occasional butte or projecting spur, and frequently, where the moun- tains disappear or contract, unite with other valleys, or expand into broad plains or basins, some of which are unobstructed, while others are dotted with buttes or covered with groups of rugged hills. The rivers of the State are small and not navigable, some of which disappear in "sinks" or sloughs. Others again find their way to the surface after "losing" themselves. This is occasioned by the porous soil that is found there. The vast productions of silver ore which her mines have yielded has resulted in the acquirement of the title of the "Silver Statc." The "Bonanza" mines have a reputation unequaled by those of any other in the world, though the carbonate deposits of Colorado promise a richer harvest of metals than the quartz mines of this very rich State. The stock rais- ing interests of Nevada are a source of revenue that few States or countries can boast. The cattle raised for beef command a higher price in Eastern markets than those of any other "Far West " State or Territory, while the wool clipped from her many flocks of sheep is said to be inferior to none that ever passed the scrutiny of the argus-eyed inspector at the greatest factories in the world. Besides her deposits of silver, there have been discovered lodes of copper, iron and other metals of remarkable richness. The future of the State, while it is perhaps not so promising as it was during the excitement incident to the discovery of the precious ores in such large quantities, can not be considered otherwise than flattering. Her progress, we predict, will be stoady and permanent, and ere the close of the present decade her population will show an increase not anticipated by her most sanguine citizens. Her schools are superior, her people enterpising and intelligent and her public institutions will compare favorably with those of States that have worn the "cape of time" so many years longer.
