Wholesale Department. Headquarters located on the first floor. All business connected with the wholesale and jobbing trade is referred to it. The immense stock of Stationery in all its branches, occupying portions of three floors, is under its management.
Retail and Library Department. On the first floor. Whatever is for sale in this entire establishment can be purchased at retail in this department. Printing an l Lithographing Department. This department occupies the entire third floor, and has the necessary steam presses and machinery for executing all kinds of printing, Litho- graphing, engraving, initial stamping, etc.
- Blank Book Manufacturing Department. Occupies the entire fourth floor, 75 by 170: contains the most complete set of machinery for ruling, folding, binding and manufacturing blank books to be found on the Pacific Coast. The machinery of the printing and binding departments is proprited by an engine and boiler located under the Stevenson Street sidewalk.
Publishing Department. Bancroft's Historical Library, on the fifth floor, is the basis of important scientific and descriptive works of a local nature, and maps and books of reference relating to the Pacific Coast, to be issued by the firm from time to time.

See also, List Received too Late for Regular Insertion. - Who is there in the world claiming any knowledge of its cities that has not heard of the newly-born metropolis of the Pacific Coast ? Her rapid strides to commercial importance excited the wonder of every nation on the face of the globe. Thirty years ago only, the present site of this handsomely built city was a barren waste, a fact that would be doubted were it not known by thous- ands who are still comparatively young. From a rank of insignificance as an exporting city she has risen, within a few short years, to a position that com- mands admiration from impartial witnesses, and elicits expressions of envy from her sister cities. Her prospective position as the second city of the Union is well supported by the argument which a steady, uninter- rupted flow of immigration offers. The Pacific Coast proper comprises more than one-third of the United States, which, with improved facilities for rapid and safe transportation, must become tributary to her leading city, and whose demands must of necessity result in her material enlargement. Factories must spring up for the manufacture of articles of use, houses inore numerous than those already here must be opened to fill orders for goods of the increasing trade, and other institutions so essential to the stimulus of a great city must speedily follow. She is and always must be recognized as the entrepot of the coast, and the most suitable western outlet of the United States. Every convenience and comfort usually found in cities of three hundred thousand inhabitants are among her possessions. Her streets are all brilliantly illuminated with gas and electric lights, and traversed by several lines of street railway, well paved and cleanly kept and broad enough for all practical purposes. Her places of amusement are numerous and liberally patronized; her public buildings are mar- vels of beauty; while her private and public residences will compare with those of any city in the country. She boasts the largest hotel in the world, erected at a cost of $8,000,000. Her parks, though small, are handsome, and her drainage is emphatically superior, her elevated situation being decidedly advantageous to this system. Although she has not escaped the depression which has been so generally felt throughout the world, yet her failures have been less in proportion than those of any other place of equal size. Her growth, of course, has not been so marked as before the "tide" set in, though the near future promises to be heavily laden with improvements. We thiuk her destiny will reveal the glory of prosperity unparalleled, and that a few years distant she will occupy the second, if not the first place, in the list of commercial and manufacturing cities.
