Portland, MULTNOMAH COUNTY,
Is situated on the left bank of the Wil- lamette river, 12 miles above its junction with the Columbia, and 90 miles above Astoria, containing a population of 20,- 000 energetic and intelligent people. It is practically a seaport, since deep water vessels ascend the river with compara- tive safety, and at all seasons of the year. It is the commercial metropolis of the Pacific Northwest, and the horo- scope of the future plainly marks out a
ritory and Oregon, depends entirely upon this bustling, well-built and beautifully laid out city for its articles of use and consumption. She is the center of wealth, refinement and culture, and to her, all other cities of the section pay respectful obeisance, acknowledging her as the "mightiest of them all." Her private residences will compare most fa- vorably with those of cities of greater pretensions and age, in point of archi- tectural design and finish, as well as in cost of construction. The business blocks are substantially built, with an eye to convenience and beauty, while the thoroughfares are cleanly kept, com- fortably broad and run at right angles. The public buildings are perfect gems in their way, and are creditable to the high order of enterprise which characterizes her public-spirited residents. A pride in the permanent and beautiful growth of the city is everywhere apparent, and everything evidently is done to enhance the admiration of her visitors. Her hotels are numerous, well appointed and elegantly arranged. Her churches are beautiful structures, all well attended and ably conducted. Her market halls are the subject of wonder, eliciting ex- pressions of surprise from those who come from afar with no such thoughts of beholding such commodious, conven- ient and tastily arranged places of trade as New Market, especially, certainly is. The public and private schools are worthy the highest words of praise, and it is due to the educational interests to concede great credit to the "moving spirits" for these "ornaments of in- struction." The residents of Portland exhibit a literary taste in the support of more than twenty publications that is truly flattering. The members of the "art preservative " are, as a class, per- sons endowed with rare intelligence and experience, to which qualities the excel- lent management that is shown in the various departments of the respective journals is traceable. The "Oregonian " and the "Standard" are morning papers, both of which show a degree of enter- prise that few journals in cities of the same size can boast.
The "West Shore, " a monthly journal, in magazine form, is a sprightly sheet of 32 pages. Its publisher, L. Samuel, is prise, possessing a knack that is essen- tially peculiar to the successful manage- ment of a newspaper. It is devoted to
destiny that will always assure her this the embodiment of energy and enter- title. It is the principal distributing point of supplies for the Umpqua, Rogue river and Willamette valleys, while all that country lying east of the literature, science and. art, and the re- Cascade Mountains, in Washington Ter- sources of the section it represents.

The "Mercury " is a weekly, issued on Sunday, containing miscellaneous mat- ter and local gossip principally. Its proprietors, W. S. Moss & Co., are wide-awake, and, although but recently established, are securing. a list of sub- scribers and patrons that speaks highly of their disposition to succeed in their new field of labor. Of the other jour- nals we can say that they are vigilant and alive to their interests, and are en- deavoring to "hold the fort," though the heavens fall, and "the storm of bullets fly with' danger." There are two evening papers, the "Bee " and the "Telegram,"" published here. Also a commercial paper, the "Reporter," which shows that the merchants of the city and the adjacent towns appreciate a paper that represents their immediate interests. It is an eight-page weekly, ably edited and replete with information peculiar to its character.
