A PACIFIC PRESS PUBLISHING HOUSE

48

12TH AND CASTRO STS., OAKLAND, CAL.

Tms large and flourishing institution is located in the beautiful city of Oakland, California, on the corner of Twelfth and Castro Streets, and contains over twelve thousand square feet of floor space. The Association owns 100 feet of land facing Twelfth-street, and 140 feet facing Castro street, and for business purposes has two large buildings-one fronting Castro street, built in the form of a Greek cross, the main portion 26x66, the transverse section, 26x44, two stories high, with base- ment and attic. The other building, fronting on Twelfth street, was erected dur- ing the summer of 1878, is 30x84 feet, two stories and an attic. The whole invest- ment, including stock on hand, is about $90,000. .

There are two papers published by this institution. The Signs of the Times, a twelve-page weekly, devoted to religion, the home-circle, and a condensed sun- mary of the news of the day, both secular and religious. It has a circulation of nearly 10,000 copies, a good proportion of which goes east of the Rocky Mount- ains. The Pacific Press is a monthly, with a circulation of 5,000. Besides its own newpaper work, several papers are printed for others.

The facilities of this house for job, book and newspaper printing are unsur. passed. From sixty to seventy hands are employed, and six power presses are kept in constant operation. We have the best equipped Job Printing Office in Oakland and second to none in the State.

Early in the Spring of 1879 the increasing San Francisco trade rendered it necessary to open an office in that city. Rooms were accordingly taken at 126 Kearny street, Thurlow Block, under the management of Mr. J. W. Gardner, who can talk business to San Francisco in seven- different languages. Mr- Gardner is fully authorized to transact business for the Association, and work intrusted to him will be promptly attended to.

From the foregoing it will be seen that this office possesses the following advantages :-

1. We pay no rent. The PACIFIC PRESS PUBLISHING ASSOCIATION owns the buildings in which it operates, and the ground on which the buildings stand.

2. We own our source of water supply, and no corporation exacts a toll on one inch of the water used in any of the departments of the concern.

3. We manufacture our type, leads and rule, and supply these articles, of superior quality, to the trade.

4. We import our own paper. The stock used in our book, news, and job rooms, and bindery, is imported in large quantities by ourselves, thus saving the heavy commission, which houses buying small lots from jobbers are uniformly com- pelled to pay.

252

5. We do our own designing, engraving, electrotyping and stereotyping. And by this we mean that each of these departments is conducted under our own roof, and each is in charge of skilled and trustworthy artists.

6. We do our own book binding and paper ruling, besides ruling job lots to order for the trade, or for individuals requiring exceptional work.

In our Engraving Department we have recently secured the services of Mr. A. Kruger, a Swiss, who came to us highly recommended by the London Graphic, hence we feel assured that we can guarantee satisfaction to the most fastidious. Specimens of our engraving can be seen at either of our offices.

A specialty is made of music printing, which feature, musicians and publishers would do well to remember.

As to our ability to turn out first-class work at reasonable prices, we would re- spectfully refer to the leading business houses of San Francisco and Oakland for whom we have done work.

We give special attention to orders from the country, and our business in this line is rapidly increasing. Orders by Mail or Express for Job Printing, Book Bind- ing, Engraving, or anything in our line, will receive prompt attention, and our prices will be just as low as though the orders were given in person.
