Is a county seat lying at the head of navigation on the Snake River, 90 miles northwest of .Walla Walla, Washington Territory, and about 400 miles above)
Portland. It is connected with pointa on the Columbia River and the C. P. Railroad by a line of stages, which run regularly and carry the U. S. mails and Wells, Fargo & Co.'s express. The coun- try surrounding it is beautifully located, and rich agriculturally, and will at some period, not very remote, be a source of great revenue and give employment to a large population. The town contains about 700 inhabitants, and as soon as the Indian question concerning the right to certain franchises under treaty of the government are settled, it will no doubt become a city of great importance.
