Is the county seat of Tehama county, and has a municipal form of government under a charter of incorporation. Its topography is desirable for the extension of its limits, being on a natural esplan- ade on the west bank of the Sacramento river, at the head of navigation, and on the Oregon Division of the Central l'a- citic Railroad, 135 miles from Sarra- mento, the State capital. Its natural advantages for a permanent and steady growth are of such a nature and so inut- tifarious as to warrant the belief that the place will become a city of consider- able importance in a peri al not very remote. It is surrounded by a very rich body of agricultural land, and the op- portunities for developing the stock- raising, horticultural and cereal-produc- ing interests are manifo'd. These facts are being taken advantage of yearly by persons who engage in the pursuits of the husbandman. "New lands are being pened up, and an increase in the acre- age sown to grain and otherwise eulti- vated is annually being mude. Every- thing indigenous to the latitude grows luxuriantly, and large erops are yearly harvested. It is mainly to the agricu .- tural interests that the rapid growth of the place is due, though lumber of splen- did quality is manufactured in great quantities. It would be an excellent point for the erection of extensive woolen mills, as the bulk of the wool grown in Southern and Eastern Ore gon and Northern California passes through this place. The yearly product of wool of Tehama county reaches almost 2,000,000 pounds, which is a great source of revenue to its capital. With the superior facilities for the manufac-

ture of woolen goods offered by unexcel- led water privileges taken advantage of, we think un investment in such an on- terprise would be a profitable one. The population of the place is put down at 3,500 people, and it has a full comple- ment of factories, mills, etc. Its citi- zens are endowed with a spirit of energy and public improvement that adily greatly to their high recommendation of intelligence and morality. The public schools are spoken of in the highest terms, a perfect system for the education of pupils seeming to be the result most sought after. All the religious denomi- nations are represented, while a sub- stantial bank supplies the residents with capital, and two newspapers furnish them with local news.
