Ses also, List of Towns Received too Late for Regular Insertien.
BOUNDED on the north by Montana and British America, on the east by Wyo- ming, on the south by Utah, and on the west by Oregon and Nevada. The word Idaho, as we are told by those familiar with the language of the Indians who in- habit that section of the country, means the "gem of the mountains," a title that is perhaps well deserved on account of its pastoral, scenic and sanitary features. It was organized in 1863, at which time it included that vast area which has since been given the name of Montana. The general character of the surface is exceedingly mountainous, though there are quite a number of valleys whose soil is said to be re- markably fertile and productive. The finest section of the Territory for agricultural purposes is that probably found in the Owyhee region. Weiser Valley, which is per- haps limited to 200,000 acres in extent, contains excellent land, with an abundance of very fine water, and capable of being profitably cultivated. It is being rapidly settled by an industrious and thrifty class of farmers, principally from the Western States. The Boise and Payette are also considered most desirable valleys, as the land is arable and of a superior character. Gold was first discovered in Idaho in 1852, on the Pen D'Oreille river, which, however, excited but little attention until the re- nowned Oro Fino mines were discovered, in 1860, from which time a steady flow of immigration has been directed towards that quarter. Camas Prairie, in the northern portion of the Territory, is spoken of us being inferior to none other, where extensive agricultural lands exist. The Territory is 400 miles long north and south, by about 300 milles wide at its broadest part, and contains upwards of 86,000 square miles. The population is only 25,000. With the completion of railroad lines through its interior, and when a general knowledge of its mineral and other resources is imparted through the medium of its own merits, the Terri- tory must become a populous and progressive empire. Each successive day pre- sents her more favorably, which must result in a prosperity especially flattering. The capacity of its inexhaustible soil and its excellent climate for a wide range of productions, must be admitted in face of the fact that cereals, vegetables and fruits of every description are surpassed in no particular by any other quarter of the globe. Its latitude seems specially adapted to the culture of fruits, whose flavor is remarkable in its richness. The grazing lands are very rich in all varieties of wild nutritious grasses, and the almost illimitable bench and mountain lands present a very tempting bait for the stock raiser. We wish that our space would permit a thorough discussion of every particular feature, since there are so many that can be most favorably presented. The Territory also boasts of one of the three greatest falls in possession of North America, the Shoshone, which makes an unbroken descent of about 200 feet, and measuring more than 300 feet in width in their narrowest part. It is also rich in mineral springs, whose curative proper- ties for almost every disease that flesh is heir to, although not generally known, are said to be a feature that must become an important factor in its development. Timber is also plentiful, and many other advantages, with improved facilities, must form the sequel which will be revealed in a glorious destiny.
