Is the metropolis of Southern Califor- nia, and is noted alike for its magnifi- cent elimate, its extensive orange or- chards and its delightful situation. Being the diverging and converging point of five lines of railway, it is made by the laws which govern trade the chief commercial center of the section, and with the increase in popu- lation which must follow the steady flow of immigration now directed to that quarter, her importance as an emporium of traffic must augment pro- portionately. At all seasons of the year the hills and valleys of the vicinity are covered with verdure, while flowers of rare beauty and fragrance blossom perpetually. The soil of the locality is very fertile, and yields abundantly. It is the county seat and contains about 18,000 people, many of whom are of Spanish birth and descent. The city is beautifully laid out, has some maguili- cent residences and charming yards, while the business portion of the place is quite substantially and tastily built. The drive to the Pacific Ocean, 17 miles distant, is an enjoyment any summer day that few, if any who have experi- enced it, do not remember with expros- sions of ecstacy.
