SITUATED between the 37th and 42d parallels of north latitude, and the 109th and 114th meridians west from Greenwich, lying north of Arizona, south of Idaho and Wyoming, east of Nevada, and west of Colorsdo and Wyoming, and having an area of 84,476 square miles. It is divided almost equally by the Wasatch mountains, which intersect its whole extent from north to south. On the east side of these lofty sentinels, are the Green and Grand rivers, which, with their sev- eral branches from the Colorado, while on the west side are Jordan, Weber, Bear, Timpanogos, Sevier and Salt Creek rivers, to whose waters the cultivation of many thousand acres of land and the reduction of vast quantities of ore can be attributed. The interests which involve the destiny of this promising Territory, are dependent on these beautiful and valuable streams. Without their presence, the many bloom- ing orchards, fields of rustling, ripening grain, and the hum of commerce, would be represented by desolation and waste. Irrigation is a necessity for the production of cereals and fruits, of which she can consistently boast in terms of enthusiasm and pride, for in all markets where the products of her soil have been introduced, they have acquired a reputation, both for quality and size, that is truly encourag- ing. These facts, in addition to the one which experiments in mining industries have demonstrated, are worthy the consideration of all seeking profitable invest- ment in that direction, and certainly augur most favorably of her future. She is pos- sessed with a multiplicity of features which must prove of advantage to her rapid and permanent growth, and not the least importance of these is her climate. In the southern part of the Territory, cotton is grown without risk, and experience proves that the silk-worm can thrive almost anywhere within her confines. Oranges and other tropical fruits have been grown also in some localities, though in some sections the temperature reaches a degree of cold that is disastrous to stock. Heavy falls of snow are annually witnessed in the northern portion. The moun- tains are covered during the greater portion of the year with a luxuriant growth of nutritious grasses, on which large herds of cattle, flocks of sheep, and droves of horses, grow sleek and fat, and become a source of great revenue to their owners. Another of her attractive features is the dryness and purity of the atmosphere, while the water which courses constantly down her mountain sides, is cool, spark- ling and delicious. The sanitary condition of the Territory is highly gratifying, and her public school system is spoken of in the highest praise. The Great Salt Lake is a beautiful sheet of water, though so strongly impregnated with chloride of sodium, aa to render it unfit for use in the promotion of the agricultural inter- ests. Very valuable salt is made by evaporation from the water which comes from it. So extremely salt is it that nothing endowed with animal life can exist in it. Its dimensions are 75 by 30 miles, and during the warm season it is visited by thou- sands of people, for the purpose of bathing in it. ' The buoyancy of the water is so great that it is found impossible for persons to sink in it. Each succeeding. year witnesses an increase in the development of her mines, and the time is not re- mote when she shall wear the crown which credits her with being the leading bullion producing dependency of the Union. For the year ending December, 1879, Wells, Fargo & Co. handled 2,301,276 pounds of refined, and 26,441,359 pounds of unre- fined lesd, 3,835,047 ounces of silver and 15,932 ounces of gold, the product of Utah, whose combined value amounted to $5,219,747.69.

When the above figures are added to those of individuals who have not had deal- ings with the express company, the aggregate will have been largely increased, and when the fact that these interests are as yet comparatively in their infancy is consid- ered, the belief of her importance as a "lustrous gem " in our country's firmament, must become deeply rooted. Her population cannot exceed 150,000 people, though the resources are capable of supporting twenty times the number. Her saw and grist mills are numerous in comparison with other sections, and give employment to an army of operatives.

RAILROADS.
Through the spirit of enterprise which largely predominated in the men who were prominently identified with the history of Utah, and who had her welfare at heart, her progress was accelerated by the introduction of rapid transporation in the form of railways. Hoping to profit by the experience of public-spirited per- sons of " the States," they contributed largely from their funds of intelligence and finance, and through that energy characteristic of the " western element," they found a remedy which soon relieved them of the evil of the stage-coach and heavy " prairie schooner, " and that was the iron horse and coaches. There are nine lines in operation in the Territory, namely, the Central Pacific, the Union Pacific, Utah Central, Utah Southern, Utah and Northern, Wasatch and Jordan Valley, Utah Western, Bingham Canyon and Camp Floyd, and Pleasant Valley.
THE CENTRAL PACIFIC
Joins hand with the Union Pacific at Ogden, and thus forms a continuous line from the Pacific to the Atlantic seaboard. The completion of this transcontinental roadway of steel was a success, unparalleled in the art of railway engineering and construction. Its machine shops at Ogden give employment to quite a number of men, and through its monthly distribution of wages, the Territory is greatly bene- fited. .
THE UNION PACIFIC
Also has its shops at Ogden, and is a " power in the land," and an auxiliary to the sustenance of a population, that is of incalculable value.
THE UTAH CENTRAL
Is 37 miles in length, having Ogden for its northern, and Salt Lake City for its southern terminus. It was built by individual labor in 1870, with very little money, by residents of the Territory, the late President Young having entire sr or- intendence of its construction. It has proved to be a profitable investment.
THE UTAH SOUTHERN
Is the second roud that was built in Utah, and it is really an extension of the Utah Central, continning southward from Salt Lake City.
THE UTAH AND NORTHERN
Is a narrow gauge, running from Ogden to a point beyond Eagle Rock, Idaho, though it is) the purpose to extend the line further into that Territory. It is owned by the Union Pacific, and it traverses some of the most magnificent scenic country ever human eyes beheld, while there is considerable land along its route that is superior for agricultural purposes.
THE OTHER LINES
Are short and of local importance, and were built by private capital, though they have been greatly instrumental toward securing a steady growth of the Territory.

Although among the oldest of Utah mining towns, the place only has a pop- ulation of about 500. The mines in the vicinity have long since acquired quite a fame for their wonderful richness, among which are the Emma, Flagstaff, Prince of Wales, North Star, etc. Previous to the spring of 1878, the town's future was full of bright promise, but a calam- itous conflagration nearly swept it out of existence at that period, and steps have been delayed toward rebuilding it. It is on the Wasatch and Jordan Valley
