OF all, the Territories of the United States there are none perhaps that sro ex- citing so much interest as Arizona. Although it has for many years been known that her mountains wers teaming with minerals, very few had the courage to face the trials incident to a settlement there.' Her rumoceness from commercial centers and the expense attached to the transportation of articles of use wers features that formed an obstacle that few cared to surmount. Since the advent of the Southern Pacific Railroad, however, a constant flow of the tide of immigration has been directed tu this new Eldorado, and where nothing but a vast stretch of uninhabited country was presented in the immediate past, there are now springing up handsome towus and cities, alive with money-seeking classes. The railroad therefore is entitled to the credit of civilizing this dependency, and to its presence alone & development of her resources is attributable. The tune is not far distant, we predict, when her claims to Statehood will be recognized, for she will be the possessor of a population which will entitle her to an admission to the Union. Her broad plains aud lovely valleys of remarkable fertility will be brought to the highest state of cultivation; beautiful homes will spring up, and the erection of noble monuments of commerce will take place, and her capabilities will have been beautifully established. The climate of the Territory is equable, and her altituds is an assurance against diseases prevalent in malarial districts. Already experi- ments hr.va proven that the production of cereals can be most profitably engaged in, wh . nutritious grasses of luxuriant growth on her grazing lands atford
an arg incontrovertible as to the feasibility of stock-raising. There is in many quarters of the Territory an abundance of tine timber, and in the manu- facture of lumber to supply the heavy demands for building purposes an army of men are given steady employment. The minos of the Territory are as yet un- developed, though capital sesking investment is finding its way hither in unlimited amounts. Prospectors are swarming through the gulches and on the mountain sides, locating claims preparatory to the erection of mills for the reduction and separation of ores, and the announcement is made in every quarter of the country that immigrants are still making preparations tocome. If a diversity of resources, such as Arizona is fast becoming noted for, can contributo to a rapid anıl per- manent growth, then her near future will be crowned with that glory. Her des- tiny will place her in the front rank of the prosperous States of the Pacific Coast.
