California-Eureka. ALPHABETICALLY.
110.118
Eureka, HUMBOLDT COUNTY,
Is situated on Humboldt Bay, 230 miles north of San Francisco, and only second to that city as a seaport in California. Eureka has a population of about 4,000, chiefly dependent upon the timber and stock interests of the county for sup- port. The city is one of the most ex- pensively and tastefully laid-out on the coast. Many handsome business blocks and public bulidings adorn her thorough- fares. The streets are rectangular and kept in good condition; while the facilities for numerous vessels "along the wharves" are quite adequate. Eu- reka is lighted with gas, and posesses many of the useful institutions of a me- tropolis ; including churches, schools, a free library, two daily and three week- ly newspapers ably couducted, and hotel accommodations that would do credit to many larger cities. The Vance House is a stately three-story building, with a towering observatory from which may be had an extensive view of the sur- rounding country. It is situated on the corner of Second and G streets. The hotel is run on strictly first-class princi- ples. Its rooms are all elegantly fur- nished, supplied with running water and gas, and heated by steam, -a novel feat- ure and a good one. The Bay Hotel and Finson House (temperance) on Estreet, and the Lick and Revere Houses on First street, are also comfortable hotels and receive a fair share of patronage. Com- munication is kept up all the year round between Eureka and San Francisco by the fast sailing, staunch and comfort- able stoamer "Humboldt," built for and specially adapted to this route. She is ably commanded by Captain Paton, and both steamship and master command the confidence of the public. The Hum- boldt County Bank has a capital of $200,000, with which it does an import- ant business. St. Joseph's Insti- tute and the Humboldt Seminary offer the best educational advantages to those who contemplate making Humboldt their home. The seminary was founded in 1873 and is in a flourishing condition. St. Joseph's Institute is under the, su- perintendence of the Sisters of Mercy, who have had a life-long experience in the training of youth. Their primary object is to instill into the minds of young girls a noble and landable emula- tion to form their hearts to virtue and to fit them to be future ornaments of society. The school was founded in 1871. It is situated in the centre of the city on an eminence which commands a full view of the bay and surrounding coun- try. The place is remarkably healthy, and the grounds well laid out. Parents desiring the comforts of a home for deli- cate children, would do well to avail themselves of the superior advantages offered here, minute attention being ren- dered to any requiring care of weakly constitutions. The course of studies is the English language, but there is overy facility for acquiring the knowledge of French and others.
