THE C. AND O. COAST OVERLAND

Run a splendid line of Concord coaches from Redding to Roseburg, a distance of 275 miles. The attractions along the route are

Interesting Resorts Accessible by Central Pacific and other Railroads and their Connections.

THE CHIEF,

And most widely known of California's attractive features is the wonderful Yosemite valley, whose remarkable chasm, towering cliffs, clothed in eternal snow and ice, rugged peaks reaching far into the lovely sky, and its picturesque plane, bordered by meandering streams of sparkling water, form a picture that is eulo- gistic even of Nature's handiwork. By taking the Southern Pacific Railroad to Merced, the valley can be reached after a ride of 86 miles vix Coulterville, or 91 miles by the way of Mariposa. The trip is made by taking one route and return- ing by the other. Either one will afford a view of those wonders of California's natural curiosities, the "Big Trees." No visitor to the Golden State should fail to see these mammoth "offshoots of Nature's virgin soil." The next in impor- tance is the grove of

Of Calaveras county, which are reached by stages from Milton, the present terminus of the Copperopolis Division of the .Central Pacific Railroad. The largest of this grove is the "Mother of the Forest," measuring 321 feet in height and SO feet in circumference at the base. The "Father of the Forest" lies pros-

trate '.pon the ground, from whose mammoth sides pieces of bark, 30 inches in thickness, and chips have been cut as souvenirs by tourists. It is 435 feet in length and 110 feet in circumference. By the annual lines, indicating its age, it shows that it had stood fully 3,000 years before Time conquered.

THE NEXT IN ORDER

Is the petrified forest, which is near Calistoga, Napa county. The trees were evidently brought to this condition by the action of volcanic influence. It is reached by the Napa Branch of the California Pacific Railroad. It is a freak of Nature that would excits the wonder of the geologist or the curiosity hunter.

LAKE TAHOE,

Noted for its great depth and altitude, as well as the want of buoyancy in its waters, which are as clear as crystal. It is a very pleasant summer resort, and is visited by thousands of persons annually. There have been several small villages built on its shores, clothed with forests of evergreens, where the best of accommodation can be obtained. There are quite a number of attractions in the immediate vicinity, besides those offered to the Nimroda or Izaak Waltons, who' follow the trail for black tailed deer, or troll for trout. It is reached by stage from Truckee, on the Central Pacific Railroad, 12 miles distant.

BESIDES THOSE ENUMERATED,

There are many other places where the lover of Nature's beauties can find sub- ject matter sufficient to keep him in employment at their study for many months, which he can hear of on application to any employee of the railroad companies.

The U. S. Fishery on the McCloud river, 17 miles from Redding, is the first point to attract the travelers attention, Accommodations for tourists wishing to visit this place can be had at Allin's Station. Next in the route come various points of interest on the Sacramento river, notably Southern's, Bailey's, Soda Springs and Strawberry Valley, all of which have numerous attractions. Bailey's or Lowe's Soda Springs, is attractive for its five springs of soda water, good fish- ing and hunting, and for affording the best opportunities for views of Castle Rock, one of Nature's master-pieces. This magnifient scene, viewed at sunrise, leaves an impression that will always be remembered with pleasure, Upper Soda Springs, 5 miles from Bailey's and 69 miles from Redding, is the principal place of resort on the Sacramento river. Hero the pleasure seeker finds not only the best of hunt- ing and .ishing, but he finds the Soda Springs House supplied with every comfort that a reasonable man should desire; an accommodating host, and at any and all times the free services of that genial old pioneer fisherman and hunter, "Uncle Dick," who is always ready to point out to the angler the favorite resorts of the wily trout, or pilot the ambitious Nimrod to the haunts of the noble buck. There is a clear, cold spring of delicious soda water at the very door of the house. Sis- son's, at Strawberry Valley, 8 miles from Soda Springs and 77 miles from Red- ding, is the headquarters of parties wishing to visit the Upper McCloud or ascend Mount Shasta, which is 14,440 feet in altitude. This place is the only rival to Soda Springs, and the unprejudiced writer hesitates to give the palm to either. Sisson makes it his business to fit out camping parties, or parties wishing to as- cend Mount Shasta, and furnishes guides, of which he is himself the most ex- perienced and capable. Further northward, just on the Oregon line, the route crosses the beautiful Siskiyou Mountains, and at their foot on the northern side, at Major Bannon's, is a convenient stopping place for partica wishing to explore the Klamath Lake region, which abounds in objects of interest. This region is the paradise of the hunter and fisherman, Clevato Lake, Pyvenial Lake and the Lava Beda, the scene of the Modoc war, are located in this region.

From the Siskiyou Mountains to the terminus of the line at Roseburg, there are many objects of interest, and many good places for rest.

Anaheim, LOS ANGELES COUNTY,

Is twenty-aix miles southeast of Los An- geles, on the San Diego branch of the S. P. R. R., 13 miles north of Ana- heim Landing. The town is situated in the center of a level plateau, 160 feet above the sea level. It is 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and on three sides is, more or less, enclosed by foot-hills four miles distant, and little mountains 10 miles distant.

To the eastward, 60 miles off, are the high mountains of the Sierra Madre, with snow-capped tops. To the westward is the ocean, with a fine sandy beach of 30 miles in extent. The surrounding county is very fertile, and is planted in fruit orchards, vineyards and orange groves. Owing to the great fertility of the soil, and extraordinary quick growth of trees and vegetation in Southern California, homes may be raised in a very short time whose beauty it would take scores of years to attain in less favored localities. The population of Anaheim is nearly 2,000; the society is good, and musical entertainments are frequent. Game is
