An interesting apot, situated 100 yards distant from the house, across Situated on Monterey Bay, eight miles from Santa Cruz, and 12 from Watson- ville, convenient by rail to either place. Mr. Claus Spreckles, who owns a large estate at this place, has erected a magni- ficent hotel, adapted for the accommoda- tion of summer travel. The location is a very desirable one, and as a resort is the most convenient and eligible on the coast. At present writing the place is being prepared for the reception of guests, and the influx promises to be a large one this season, which sets in about April. The dining hall, frequently converted into a ball room, is a feature of the place, and one in which the management take great pride. It is a large room, handsomely festooned and lighted, and its floor is second to none that we have ever stepped upon. Bath rooms, closets and parlors abound in the house, and an excellent quality of gas is manufactured on the premises for every room. l'retty cottages, for families, are tastefully grouped in the grounds. Auburn,

PLACER COUNTY.

Auburn, the county seat of Placer county, is one of the oldest and hest known mining towns of the State. It is situated on the line of the Central Pa- cific R. R., 36 miles northeast of Sacra- mento, and about two miles from the American river. It is in the foothill re- gion of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the altitude being 1,350 feet. The seen- ery in the vicinity of Auburn is grand and beautiful, and the climate, though warmer in summer than that prevailing along the coast, is extremely healthful. For these reasons, the place has become in late years, somewhat of a resort for tourists and invalids. Tho town is supported chiefly by mining and fruit growing. Auburn has at preseut two churches, the Methodist-Episcopal, and the Roman Catholic. A third church edifice, for the use of the Congregation- alista, will also shortly be built. The Episcopalians hold monthly services, though as yet possessing no church edi- tice of their own. The benevolent in- stitutions comprise lodges of Masons, Odd Fellowa, A. O. U. W. and Good Templars. A large and handsome pub- lic school building, with four teachers, supply the educational want of the town. Two papers, both weekly, are published here. Population 2,000, and growing.
