ed as the county seat three years after- ward. Geographically it is in the center of the county, thus making it the most desirable for the honor it bears. It is a prosperous town of 1,500 inhabitants, well built and pleasantly located. Its Court House and jail cost, in 1872, up- wards of $40,000. It is the distributing point of mail matter for a large section of country, five routes terminating here. There are a number of springs, both hot and cold, possessing medicinal properties that aro highly prized by invalids, es- pecially those troubled with rheumatism. Persons afflicted with cutaneous erup- tions find a remedy in these waters that entirely remove them from their skin. It is in the heart of a rich agricultural and pastoral region the productions of which contribute largely towards swell- ing the exports of the State. The seeret orders are all in a flourishing condition, and all the religious denominations are represented. It has two weekly news- papers. The sanitary condition of the place is very good.
