LYING between latitude 44° 15' and 49° north, and longitude 104º and 116° west, is one of our most isolated dependencies. It is bounded on the north by British America, on the east by Dakota and by a short distance along the Illth meridian by Wyoming, on the south by Wyoming and Idaho and on the west by Idaho. Its length east and west is 540 miles, and its average breadth is 275 miles, having an area of 145,776 square miles, or, in round num- bers, 93,296,640 acres, of hich 38,000,000 are unexcelled for grazing purposes, 16,- 000,000 are of exhaustless fertility and susceptible of a high cultivation, 14,000,- 000 are rich in the possession of an excellent growth of timber, and the remainder -that which is not covered by streams and lakes-can beclassed as mineral lands, from which more than $150,000,000 were taken during the first seventeen years following its settlement. One cannot form an adequate conception of its extent until the fact is stated that its area is equal to more than that of England, Scot- land, Wales, and Ireland combined, or the six New England States and the State of New York in our own country. When we consider, therefore, that a popula- tion numbering many millions is supported by each of those sections, with no natural advantages superior to those which can be obtained in this vast empire, it cannot be doubted that in a few years this must be the scene of equal commercial and manufacturing activity over the broad bosoin of whose majestic rivers an interchange of the respective productions must be had with our foreign cousins. Its great diversity of resources, its genial, healthful climate and tho magnificence of its unequalled scenery, are features that cannot long be lost sight of. A des- tiny that every patriotic citizen would feel a pride in must be the own that will adorn the history of the young Territory in the near future. Capital has not sought investment in this region because of its remoteness from the line of com- mercial centers, though with the advent of the Northern Pacific Railway, which is to penetrato its interior and pass through its whole width, an era of develop- ment of unparallelled extent is confidently anticipated. The music of machinery and the multiplicity of noises which form the din that is heard in a bustling, active world, must soon be familiar to the ears of its inhabitants. Manufactories of every character will be established, lands will be cultivated, educational enter- prises inaugurated, and the elements of prosperity, peace and plenty will be gloriously felt by its honored citizens,
