Ashland, JACKSON COUNTY,
Is a very pretty little town of 600 inhabi- tants, on the line of the C. & O. Coast Cverland State route, 315 miles south of Portland and 160 miles north of Redding. It is growing quite rapidly and substan- tially, and its facilities for manufactur-
ing being of a superior nature its future cannot be regarded with any but favor- able eyes. The valley in which it is situ- ated ia very rich agriculturally speaking, and the stock-raising interests are gradu- ally developing. The scenery in the vi- cinity is picturesque and the hum of ma- chinery in the sawmills, sash and door factory and woolen mill are sounds that give it an air of manufacturing import- ance and leave an impression of its per- manency that is decidedly encouraging. The power derived from Ashland creek would be sufficient to drive the machinery of Birmingham. Ita climatic features are most favorable and the sanitary con- dition of the place is superb. A weekly paper, the "tidings," ia in every res- pect an excellent journal and indicates an able management and good support. This is the home of W C Myer, Esq., im- porter and breeder of the celebrated Per- cheron horses.

Astoria, CLATSOP COUNTY,
Is the oldest town of English settlement on the Pacific Coast, having been used as a post by the Hudson Bay Fur Company .as early as 1808. It has a population of 5,000 who are permanent residents, though during the fishing season it is greatly increased by the addition of per- sons who follow the pursuit of Izaak Walton. The place is situated 15 miles above the estuary of the Columbia, 100 miles below Portland, and is partly built on high, abrupt hills that surround it, though the greater portion of it has been constructed on piling above the water. The largest canneries on the Columbia are located here and give employment to quite a number of men during the season when salmon are "running." The town depends mainly on the fishing interests for its support, though a large number of vessels annually receive the bulk of their cargoes here. Considerable lumber is manu actured also in the vicinity. The Custom House and Postoffice, situ- ated in the center of a pretty square, is a nice two-story stone building, from whose observatory the stars and stripes are con- stantly seen floating. There is a paper publiseed here, the "astorian," a daily and weekly, published by D C Ireland, Esq., which ranks among the best jour- nala of the State.

Baker City, BAKER COUNTY,
Is the county seat and has a population of 900. Its location in the lovely Pow- der valley is very pretty and desirable as a place of residence. Considerable mining is carried on and the stock-raising interests are largely developed, the graz- ing lands contributing quite liberally to that end. It is reached from Portland by the O. S. N. Co.'s steamers and a stage line from The Dalles, 247 miles dis- tant, and from Winnemucca by stage, distant 420 miles.
