San Andreas, CALAVERAS COUNTY,
Is centrally located in the county of which it is the county seat; reached from San Francisco via the Stockton and Copperopolis Division of the Central l'acitic Railroad and Mr. R. W. Rus- sell's stage linc, from which it is distant 139 miles. It has a population of 1,200 people, whose intelligence and kindly natures are reflected from frank and open countenances. The Court House is a large and comfortable building. and the officials in charge are efficient and pleas- ant gentlemen. It boasts an array of le- gal representatives of which any com- munity might feel proud. It was, in an early day, the scene of exciting bustle incident to the richiness of the gold bear- ing leads in the vicinity, though at pres- ent nothing in comparison can be seen. It depends, however, mainly on its lodes for support, yet fruit-growing and stock- raising are important factors in the nourishment imparted to her growth. The altitude is 1,600 feet. It is a very healthy placo.

Is a place of 3,000 inhabitants, heanti- fully situated in a lovely valley and sur- rounded by the most fertile and product. ive bodies of agricultural land in the State. Its schools and churches are well supported, the climate is perfect and the sanitary condition decidedly su- perior. There are quite a number of manufacturing and industrial enterprises permanantly established, and the ele- ments so essential to the steady and sub- stantial development of a city are found in this locality in the form of good graz- ing and agricultural soil, plenty of water and timber and a pure, stimulat- iag atmosphere. It is the county seat, and is reached by a stage drive of three miles from Colton, on the Southern l'a- cific Railroad.
