Is a place of no little importance, situ- ated on the John Day river, in one of the best mining districts of the State, 295 miles from Portland reached by the O. S. N. Co.'s steamers and a stage line from The Dalles. The placer and quartz leads are rich in gold, and the products of which within the past twenty years have aggregated nearly $20,000,000. Stock-raising is extensively carried on and the development of the region seems to be of a permanent character. Good schools are an attractive feature, and the condition of the place from a sanitary standpoint is superb. It is the county seat and has good society.

Corvallis, BENTON COUNTY.
Is a county seat, nicely situated on the west bank of the Willamette river, and is apokeu of as one of the pleasantest towns in the " Webfoot State." The cessation temporarily of the construc- tion of the O. & C. Railway has made it the terminus of that road, which was completed just a short time previous to our visit therd. Its population is about 2,000. It is the seat of a college estab- lished by the M. E. Churob, au academy for young ladies, and other schools. It contains several nice churches, all well attended, and a weekly newspaper, the "Gazette," published by W. 8. Carter, Esq., a genial and kind-hearted gentle- man, and a veteran of the craft, whoso health, we are sorry to learn, is very poor It is distant from Portland 85 miles by river, which is navigable for light draft steamers to this point. Ya- quina and Alsen bays are located about 50 miles distant, and are favorite places of resort during the summer season, and the former is noted for its oysters. A railroad will soon connect Corvallis with these points.
