Sonora, TUOLUMNE COUNTY,

Is the county seat, and distant from San Francisco, via Stockton and Cop- peropolis Division of the Central l'acitic Railroad, and Mattison & Co's stage line, 150 miles. It is in a pretty basin of the Sierra Nevadas, where placer mining was carried on quite extensively, and where in early times, scenes of ex- citement wereoften witnessed. It boasts a population of 2,200, and its altitude is nearly 2,000 feet above the sea level. It is a well built place, and its climatic fca- tures are attractive, being quite a resort for invalids, who soon find restoration from all physical ailments. The schools are good, the churches well attended, and the society is very fine.
