Roseburg, DOUGLAS COUNTY,

Is the county seat and the present ter- minus of the O. & C. Railway, 200 miles distant from Portland and 275 miles north of Redding, and during our visit early in the winter of the present year showed evidences of a healthier com- mercial condition than that of any other town along the route.

The population is placed at 1,200, and being geographically the center of a rich agricultural and stock-raising region, bordered by a deposit of minerals that must prove a valuable auxiliary to her development, the future of the place must be encouraging to those closely identified with her interests. This is also the northern terminus of the C. & O. Coast Overland Mail Co, whose fine Concord coaches are run daily between Roseburg and Redding, California, con- veying the U. S. mail, Wells, Fargo & Co's express, and passengers with quiek dispatch. The acenery along the route is indeed sublime and grand beyond des- cription, and the novelty of passing over Scott Mountain, whose altitude is 10,000 feet above the sea level, is one that is attended with feelings of ecstacy, es- pecially in the summer season, when the towering peak of "Old Shasta," clad in eternal anow, glistens in the mellow sun- light.

The town is quite well built, contain- ing several handsome buildings, both private and public. Its schools are good, its morals of a high standard, and its sanitary condition excellent.
