PREFACE.
The prevailing custom amongst publishers of writing a " Preface " for their works should by common consent be relegated from their "prescribed duties," particularly when the confidence is warranted in the merits of their productions. A book that is worthy public esteem needs no apology, and one that does not satisfy the requirements which prompted its publication may be considered an "unpardonable imposition." Feeling that our untiring energy towards the attainment of success in this branch of literary effort has been rewarded, we as- sume that a "valedictory" of this nature is superfluous. Yet, now that we are in for it, we shall avail ourselves of the privilege of a few modest utterances that opportunity confers upon us. The DIRECTORY AND GAZETTEER is the work of many hands and its completion has involved no little expense and trouble. Thousands of letters have been written, many fatiguing journeys were made and a great deal of profanity could have been expended on unavoidable delays and petty carelessness had it not been that the "conscience of our pa- tience" rebelled against it. Patience is our redeeming virtue. It is an idol de- serving of worship. Therefore we pay it reverence. Our bump of gratitude is largely developed also, and we trust that an acknowledgement of our obligations to the various railroad, steamship and stage line officials for their many acts of kindness in lessening our labors and promoting the interests of our book in other ways is a confirmation of the statement. Our sincere thanks are also due county officials, postmasters and other co-workers for their zeal in expoditing the pro- gress of our work.
With adieus kindly repeated and the hope that our volume for 1880 -- 81 may be the medium of great convenience, we wish our patrons in particular and the people of the Coast in general, unbounded prosperity and happiness.
