Although the district in which this bustling mineral prodigy is situated has been known for some years to be one of the richest and most extensive mining sections in the world, it did not receive any impetus to an astonishing growth until the year 1877, when the town site was laid out, and when an influx of
prospectors and capitalists swooped down upon it like a " wolf on the fold." Enterprises were speedily inaugurated to reach the deposits of valuable ore, and plans were rapidly matured by which the law of " supply and demand" in traffic might be complied with. The erection of business houses of a perma- nent nature, private and public homes and manufactories, immediately followed at a remarkable pace, and the announce- ment was soon made that "the child was born." There is no parallel, except that offered in the city of Leadville, where cities of such importance have sprung into an existence that bids fair to last through many generations, and which she certainly enjoys. The streets are alive with a surging mass of ; human beings, and her population of 7,000 is the embodiment of indefatigable energy, enterprise and intelligence. The alti- tude is 9,000 feet above the level of the sea. There are several banks, employing an immense capital, four daily news- papers, well conducted . and liberally supported, and a full complement of goud hotels, all tested to their utmost capacity. A line of railroad, which is greatly needed for the transportation of vast amounts of bullion and . freight, will soon connect Carson City, Nevada, with this city. The project is under advisement and is universally encour- aged, and the lapse of a short time, we doubt not, will witness the entrance of a serecehing locomotive and its train into this city of bright promise.
