NOTES ON WATERTOWN LANDS, GRANTS AND POSSESSIONS
By J. GARDNER BARTLETT
Part 2 of the Printed Vol. I of the Watertown Records has from pages 15 to 146 three Inventories of Grants and Possessions ; the so-called First Inventory covering pages 15-67, the so-called Second Inventory covering pages 68-113, and the so-called Third Inventory covering pages 114-146.
The purpose of these notes is to show that these Inventories have been erroneously numbered chronologically; that the so-called Second Inventory was really the First one made; that the so-called Third Inventory was really the Second one made; and that the so-called First Inventory was really the Third one made.
At the General Court held 9 September 1639, an order was passed "To record all mens houses and lands, being certified under the hands of the men of every towne, deputed for the ordering of their affairs." (Records of Colony of Massachusetts Bay, Vol. 1 [printed ], p. 276.)
In compliance with this law, on 4 Jan. 1641/2, the selectmen of Watertown "ordered that Simon Eire shall write a Transcript of the Lands in a Booke and give it in to the Court." (Watertown Records, printed Vol. 1, Part 1, p. 7.) Mr. Eyre, the Town Clerk, soon undertook this compilation and first made an In- ventory of all the GRANTS only; this actual FIRST INVEN- TORY is the erroneously so-called Second Inventory, and covers pages 68-113. This really First Inventory was therefore started after 4 Jan. 1641/2, and must have been completed before 10 May 1642, as on that date the allotments of the large farms in Weston were made, and none of these grants are included in this In- ventory. (See printed Vol. 1, Part 2, pp. 11-14.) This Inven- tory was the one turned into the General Court on 18 May 1642, when "Watertowne delivering in a transcript of their lands, nott being perfect was lent them back again." (Records of Colony of Massachusetts Bay, Vol. 2 [printed], p. 2.)
The above Inventory was "nott perfect" as it did not include the large farm grants of 10 May 1642 and the records of posses- sions acquired by inheritance or purchase. Therefore a SECOND INVENTORY was made by Mr. Eyre of such POSSESSIONS only, which is the erroneously so-called Third Inventory and covers pages 114-146. Internal evidences show that this Second Inven- tory of Possessions was made after 20 July 1642, as John Sher- man possessed an 8 acre meadow lot he had bought on that date from Samuel Saltonstall (See Watertown Records, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 138, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 41) ; also after 9
ii
Notes on Watertown Lands, Grants and Possessions
Nov. 1643, as William Page possessed a 6 acre upland lot he had bought on that date from Widow Simson (See Watertown Rec- ords, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 145, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 56) ; also after 2 Nov. 1643, as Isaac Sterne possessed a 60 acre upland lot no. 25 in the 3d division which he had bought on that date from Thomas Ruck (See Watertown Records, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 117, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 46) ; also after 1 Dec. 1643 as John Biggellye [Bigelow] possessed a 20 acre upland lot, no. 15 in the 1st division which he had bought on that date from William Bridges (See Watertown Records, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 140, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 46). But it was made before 16 Nov. 1644 as on that date Thomas Boyden bought a 2 acre meadow lot from George Parkhurst who possessed it when this Second Inventory was made (See Watertown Rec- ords, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 142, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 54). It therefore appears that this Second Inventory of Posses- sions (erroneously called the Third Inventory), was made be- tween 1 Dec. 1643 and 16 Nov. 1644.
Having thus listed, first the Grants, and secondly the Posses- sions, Mr. Eyre from these two compiled a THIRD INVEN- TORY OF GRANTS AND POSSESSIONS being the results of the other two Inventories, and this Third Inventory is the erroneously so-called First Inventory and covers pages 15-67. This THIRD INVENTORY was made after 1 Dec. 1643 as John Biggelye is listed as owner of the 20 acre upland lot no. 15 in the 1st division which he had bought on that date from William Bridges (See Watertown Records, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 58, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 46). But it was made before 16 Nov. 1644 as on that date Thomas Boyden bought a two acre meadow lot from George Parkhurst who is listed as the owner of this lot when this Third Inventory was made (See Watertown Records, Vol. 1, Part 2, p. 62, and Suffolk County Deeds, Vol. 1, p. 54).
To sum up:
The actual First Inventory, of Grants only, (erroneously called the Second Inventory and covering pages 68-113), was made be- tween 4 Jan. 1641/2 and 10 May 1642.
The actual Second Inventory, of Possessions only, by inheritance or purchase, (erroneously called the Third Inventory and cover- ing pages 114-146), was made between 1 Dec. 1643 and 16 Nov. 1644.
The actual Third Inventory of ownership both by Grants and by Possessions by purchase and inheritance, (erroneously called the First Inventory and covering pages 15-67), was a combined compilation of the actual First and Second Inventories, and was made subsequent to the latter, but between 1 Dec. 1643 and 16 November 1644.
