Inquire into the Circumftances of sd Widw. and See if they Could git Her in to Some familie where She may be Imployed and taken care of So as may be for her comfort; and beft for ye Intreft of ye Town.
The Selectmen Notwithftanding their Care abt. gitting a Schoolmafter (Since ye Death of m' Jenifon) have heitherto been Difapointed. But they having had Encouragmt from M' Nath !. Hareington (who was Schoolmafter formerly) made their Application to him; who at their Defire was prefent at this Meeting. And the Selectmen Agre'd with Him ye sd Nath1. Harrington to keep the Grammer & Englifh School in Watertown And to begin to keep sd School the Second Munday in Augst. Next And to keep sd School from thence to the Laft Day of March following (Except so much time as to take care of gitting in His Indian Harveft and the time He takes thereabot He to give Acct of And He ye sd Harrington to have as a Reward from the Town for His Service After the Rate of Three hundred Pounds P year old Tenor for the time He Keeps sd School, He to board himfelf, To which He ye sd Nath !. [68] At a Meeting of the Selectmen of Watertown Wefton & Waltham at the Widw. Mary Learneds in Sd Watertown On the Sixth Day of August 1750. In order to Confider what proper Method and Steps are to be taken for the Speedy Repairing of the Great Bridge in sd. Watertown. Upon Vewing and Searching the Southerly Peer of sd Bridge, the Sd Selectmen find it So Defective that it is Judged Necessary to Rebuild Said peer and to Do it as Soon as may be, and in Stead of King Pofts and braces above the Bridge, To have a Mud Cill and Supporters under Neath as at the other Peers.
And in order thereunto Agre'd that there be a Mud cill Procured thirty Six feet in Length, and a foot Square. and two Cap pieces of Eighteen feet in Length & a foot Square of good white Oake. to bear the String pieces. It is concluded that the King Posts and Braces Now Standing above sd Peer will Anfwer for Pofts or Supporters and Braces A under Neath. Mr Elifha Jones is Defired to procure the Cap pieces as Soon as may be ; And the Mud Cill alfo if m' Joseph Harrington nor Mr John Dix cant procure sd Cill.
Agre'd that M' Edw. Harrington of Watertown M' John Walker of Wefton and Mr Jofiah Fisk of Waltham be a Comtee. to take care to agree with Workmen, and to See that the work of building sd Peer be well Done. And to git the work done by the Middle of Sepr Next.

At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at ye Houfe of Jonas Bond Esq on the 20th. Day of August. 1750. M' Sam1 Coollidge being brot. to Watertown by Virtue of a Warrant from under the Hand & Seal of Justice Steal of Boston in the County of Suffolk, (He was firft brot to ye Conftable of Chareftown and by said Conftable conveyed to ye Conftable of Cambridge, and by ye Conftable of Cambridge He was conveyed to one of ye Selectmen of Water- town) the Sixteenth of Auguft Inftant. The Selectmen confidering that ye sd Coollidge Comes under their Care as He belongs to Watertown. And sd Coollidge being undr Such Circumftances and Diforders, that requires Speedy care to prevent His runing abot. and so of His being Troublefome and Mifchevous (of which He has been much Complained off) The Selectmen A con- fidering of his cafe and prefent Circumftances, are of Oppinion that it will be moft for ye Benifet of ye Town, the good of sd Coollidge and the Quiet of the Publick that the Said Coollidge be Confined in Goal for the prefent (there being no work houfe or other proper publick place of Confinmt) till ye Selectmen can provide a Sutable place for him where he may be taken care of and that the Town of Watertown "A be at the Charge of his being in Goal the time the time that He remains there, and Since He ye sd Coollidge is Run away again out of Town, and is Strowling abot. Vagabone Like, Agre'd by ye Selectmen that the Juftices at Cambridge &c be Defired to take him up if He comes there and send him to Goal, where He may be Confined,

The Selectmen being Notified by Amos Bond by Writing under his hand bearing Date ye 20th. of Augst. 1750. That He had taken into his family one Hannah Rofs who came from Lexington to his Houfe the Tenth Day of November Laft paft her Circum- ftances being low in the world &c. Ordred the Clerk to Isue out a Warrant Directed to one of ye Conftables of Watertown forth with to warn the sd Hannah Rofs to Depart out of sd Water- town. (which was done Accordingly the 21st Inftant and Committed to Conftable Henry Goding.) Caution Entred Concord Cort.

The Widw. Webb wanting Some Clothing to keep her warm & Comfortable Ordred that there be a Gound got for her of Homfpun worfted & wool or Cotten & wool, a Bayes Peticote a payer of Hofe & a Hankerchief and that mrs. Coollidge with whom ye sd Widw lives be Defired to get the abovesd things for ye sd widw. and get them Made up and bring in her Acct. thereof to ye Selectmen to be paid out of ye Treafurey. Sam1 Hager having Informed the Selectmen that he had taken into his houfe on Wm. Lacky Wife & Child who came from Waltham Some time the Latter End of May Laft. Ordred the Clerk to Isue out a Warrant to Warn the Sd Wm. Wife & Child to Depart out of Watertown.
The Selectmen are Informed this day by m' Sam1 Hager that ye sd Lacky had taken in one Esther Gale in to his family who came from Waltham some time in Augst Laft paft her Circum- ftances are poor, and She is Suppofed to be pregnant and Near her time Ordred the Clerk to Isue out a Warrant to Warn the Sd Esther forthwith to Depart out of Watertown.
At this Meeting the Selectmen propofed to m' Nath1 Har- rington prefent Schoolmafter, that for the Support of a fire for the School, He Should Send to Parents and Mafters that Send yr Children & Sert to School to Send Six fhillings old Tenor per head to procure wood for sd fire which is Agreable to a Vote of ye Town that thofe yt Send yr Children & Servts. to School, Should find wood for the fire there. (A Warrant was Isued out to warn ye abovesd Lacky &c & ye sd Esther) and Return made of ye sd Lacky Wife & Child being warned out ye sd Esther beging gone out of Town. Caution Entred Charlitown Cort in December )
At a meeting of ye Selectmen at ye houfe of Mr Edw. Harring- ton on ye 7th Day of Novr. 1750. At sd meeting the Selectmen Agreed to Apply to A Juftice of ye peace for a Warrant to Carry Wm. Lacky Wife & Child (who was Come into Watertown) out of sd Watertown to Waltham where they belong & are legal Inhabts. they being leagally warned to Depart, that ye Warrant be Committed to a Conftable as Soon as ye fourteen days are out from the time of warning there being great Dainger of Charge if not Removd
The Selectmen Confidering the sd Circumitances of Sam! Coollidge, Appointed Jonas Bond Esq' and Mr Joseph Harring- ton two of ye Selectmen, to Ufe their prudence & Care to See if the sd Coollidge can by any Means be got into the work houfe at Boston Watertown to Reimbut the Charge of his keeping there what his Labour will not Anfwer, and that Coll. The Selectmen defired Mr Jonan Bemis & Mr Edw. Harrington to procure Some lath Nails and that they Nail the Meeting houfe glafs where it is wanting, And that they procure a Glazer to mend sd Glafs where it wants to be mended.
[70] At a Meeting of ye Selectmen on the 30th. of Novbr. 1750. at ye Widw. Mary Learneds
The Town being in Dainger of being put to Cost & Charge relating to Sam1 Coollidge ( He being become a Common difturber of ye peace) if care be not Speedely taken to prevent the Same, he having been brot. (some time since) to Watertown by Authority. The Selectmen having taken the Affair of sd Coollidge into Confideration, Did Agree with Sam1 Whitney to take the Care of ye sd Coollidge for the Space of one Month, and to take a prudent care of him, and keep him Confined to prevent his Rambling abt. to ye Difturbence of ye publick. and He the sd Whitney to have Reafonable Recompence from the Town for his Trouble
The Selectmen Defired Mefsrs. Joseph Harrington & Edw. Harrington two of the Selectmen to go on the Next Day and fetch up ye sd Coollidge (if He can be found) and cary & Deliver him to the sd Whitney that he may be taken care off.
At a Meeting of the Selectmen at y Houfe of Jonas Bond Esq'. on the 31st Day of December AD. 1750. The Selectmen having put Sam1. Coollidge to Sam1. Whitneys for a month upon Tryal which was out the 29th Inftant. The sd Whitney Charges 5/4 P week Lawfull money. And ye sd Whitney being Willing to keep the sd Coollidge Longer at ye Same price Pr week, The Selectmen being well Satisfyed with the sd Whitneys care & Conduct Re- lating to said Coollidge. Agreed that ye Said Whitney Still take care of ye Said Coollidge, and keep him till further order of the Selectmen and to have as a rewarde therefor, from the town 5/4 P week for the time that He Shall keep him. The Selectmen Agre'd that in the mean-time to take prudent care to See if they can't git ye said Coollidge into Some place and bufnefs whereby he may do Some thing to help Support himfelf.
At a Meeting of the Selectmen of ye Houfe of Joseph Mason Esq' on ye 24th of January 1750. The Selectmen taking in to Confideration the Circumftances of Sam1 Coollidge, and having been Advifed to git him into the work houfe at Bofton as a proper Expedient to recover him from his Diforderly way of Living &c. The Selectmen Agreed to make an Afsay to git him into sd Work houfe, and Accordingly Drew up and Signed a Short Representation of his Cafe Directed to ye Overfeers of ye poor of Bofton. And a Requeft that ya Would Admit him into their work houfe. and manifefted our Redenefs to Sign any proper

(4) To bring in yr Votes for a County Regester & Treafurer. (5) to know the Mind of ye Town whether Swine Shall Run at large und' the Regulations in ye Law.

Petition and evry part thereof and further for the Town to Confider and do what they shall think Proper for the preferving sd Bank or Town Land Lying between the Town way & ye River at that place, and the Securing of sd way from being further Damnified by haling in of Timber, and to Confider what proper Steps to take that Some profet may Accrew to the Town by Timber being Laid there by Strangers or Perfons not belonging to the Town. (21) To know the mind of ye Town whether they will Rent out the Little Island between the Mill Crick & ye River below the Mill. and to do wt is proper with Relation thereunto. (22) In as much as there Appears a Confiderable Altreation (for the better) in M' Sam1 Coollidge To know whether it is the mind of ye Town that sd Coollidge Should be Improved to keep the School in the Town for trial, and if upon trial it Shal Appear to thofe who are proper judges that the great & good end of a School is Anfwred by his keeping of ye same, that He be then Continued in the keeping of sd School, but if Such good end is not Anfwred by sd Coollidge keeping sd School that yn He be Difmifsed from it and that Some other Steps be taken with him, that he May be in Some buifnefs whereby he may be gaining Some thing to Suport himfelf and that a nother Schoolmafter be provided. (23) To know the mind of ye Town whether they will choofe & Impower a Committee in the Name of ye Town to Afk for the Money belonging to the Town of Watertown which for many Years has and Still Lyes in the hands of a Commtee.
