[119] We the Subfcribers Inhabts. of Watertown having been Warned to attend a Town Meeting on June 13th. 1754. in Order to Act on the Several Articles contained in the Warrant for ye calling of sd. Meeting &c. We being Sencable ot ye Great Difadvantage we are under by reafon of the Proceedings and Conduct of a Party who Dwell on the Southerly part of ye Town who in order to drive on their Scheems in regard to the pulling down and removing the Meeting Houfe, and in order to gain their point have in a moft Arbetrary & Opprefsive Manner (as we Apprehend) Denied a Number of Perfons who were pofseft of Some of ye beft Estates in the Town from putting in their Votes in the moft Important Affair that ever came before a Town and thereby denied them of the juft rights & priviledge of Englifh Subjects, when at the Same time they pufhed on their Vote and obtain'd it in an over bearing & as we the Sub- fcribers Apprehend an Elegal maner. But sd. Party having Obtained the aforesd. Pretended Vote, proceeded Immediatly to the pulling or reather breaking down the Meeting Houfe by which rafh unprefedented proceedings, the Subfcribers are greatly Injured & greived all wch. proceedings reflects Difhonour on ye Wifdom of the great & General Court who were pleafed to Interpofe in placeing and fixing the Meeting Houfe more than Thirty Years Since &c. and has a Direct tendency to bring on contentions and Confusions in ye Town again. and it is Eafy to obferve on the Proceedings of this party how they Stile themfelves Town as if all their Votes and propofalls had the Santion of Town Orders, and thofe that comply not therewith were only an Inconfidrable party or a few Straglers on the bounds of the Town, when at the Same time it is well known that thofe who are Oppofite to the Removal of ye Meeting Houfe are According to the Exacteft Computation owners and Pofsefsors of much ye greater part of yd Ratable Eftate in the Town, and that our Proceedings in order to Defend our Just Rights and priviledges in the Meeting Houfe where it was firft Errectted has been Justifyed by People in General; whereas the Violent Proceedings of ye South Party has been as univer- feally Condemn'd
And whereas the Town is Called together to Know their Mindes, whether they will Build a Houfe for the Publick worfhip of God, to Determine the deMentions the time when and place where it Shall be Errected and to grant a Sufficent Sum of money to Build and finifh &c. and to See if the Town Will Appoint a Committee to purchafe Meterals and See it finifhed &c. and to See what the Town will give their Com-

mittee a Day &c. and whereas the Voteing & Granting sd. A Articles will bring an hevey and unreafonable coft and burden on the Subcribers wch. we Apprehend cannot be juftified Either by Law or Reafon, therefore we the Subfcribers do now give our Decent and proteft againft our paying any part of the Coft or Charge that is Propofed to be Voted or Raifed on sd. Articles and that for the yt following Reasons.
(1)
[120] (1.) We apprehend that We have just grounds to Afsert that it is no ways owing to any fault or Mifconduct of ours that we are Now Deftitute of a Publick Meeting Houfe for the worfhip of God and it is well known that in february Laft the Town had a very Commodius and Decent Houfe for that purpofe which houfe was Stated and fixed by ye Authority of ye Great and General Court as alfo to ye General Satisfaction of ye Body of the Town on which Settlement the Town have Enjoyed great peace and Quietnefs for a great Number of Years.
(2) As to the Building a New Meeting Houfe we Appre- hend it will be very unjuft and unreafonable to Vote and Oblidge the whole Town to be at the Cost and charge thereof there being a Number of Gentlemen who Oblidg'd themfelves by An Obligation under their hands and Seals wch. was Delivred to the Town Treafurer to Save the Town from all coft and Charge that might Arife by their Taking Down & Setting up sd Houfe in the Manner & form mentioned in Said Obligation and it is well known there was not one Third part of ye Town wld. have Voted as they Did, had it not been for sd. Obligation, and we Apprehend that in as much as sd. Committee pull'd down the Meeting Houfe at all adven- tures, So they took upon them the Chance of all Hazzards, and are of Oppinion that their Obligation is as much binding Now as it was the firft Day it was given .- And therefore Defire yt this our Decent & Proteft be put on file by the Clerk and Recorded in the Town Book .-
