Sewells time for keeping the School being Near Expiring, Agreed that M' Sewel be Treated wth to keep the School till the firft Munday in March Next if he will keep it after the Rate of £ 250 Pr Year old Tenor and board himfelf. At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at the Meeting houfe on the 25 of July 1749. Upon further View of ye Meeting houfe Mr Benjn. Haftings and m' Sam1 Stratton being prefent we find that the Platform above the Bell is Very Rotton both Bords & Shingles, It was Judged by the Workmen that plank wld be better for sd Platform than Double boarding and so Cork the joints and Cover it with Shingles Agreed with mr. Haftings & Stratton to procure what Plank and other Metarels that is Necessary and to Do the work of Repairing the Meeting houfe who under took to do the Same, And to Do it the beginning of Sep' next or before, and to Draw money out of ye Treafurey for the purchafeing Metarels. M' Jon". Sewal our prefent Schoolmafter Mett the Selectmen and and Engaged to keep ye Grammer & Englifh School in the Town untill the firft Munday of March Next After the Rate of 280 £ P Year and to board himfelf. [50] At a meeting of ye Selectmen at m' Ebenezer Thatchers on the 10th Day of Nov. 1749. The Widw. Grover and ye Widw. Stearns under their Necefsitous Circumftances made their Application to ye Selectmen for some reliefe with Refpect to wood Agre'd to procure One Load of Wood for ye sd Widw. Grover. and Two Loads of Wood for ye sd Widw. Starnes as Soon as may be at the Towns Charge.
Whereas the Vote of ye Town Relating to ye School is, That thofe Parents and Mafters who Send their Children & Serts. to School Sld. Provide firewood for sd School. The Selectmen judge 8/ old Tenor P Scholler is Little Enough to provid Wood for sd School, And Accordingly Agre'd that ye Schoolmafter be Defired to Send to Such Parents and Mafters yt Send yr Children & Serts to School to send 8/ Pr Scholler in order to procure wood for ye School. And that the Schoolmafter be Defired to Send to thofe who are Dilenquent ye Laft Year to Send their Coto as others have Done to pay ye Selectmen they having Advanced the money.

At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at Mr Isaac Sanderfons on the 23d. Day of November 1749.
The Selectmen having had freqent Complaints from divers Gentle. of Cambridge as well as from ye Selectmen of sd Town of ye Deplorable Cafe that Samt Coollidge is in at this prefent for want of evry thing as to Clothing, and in a Suffering Condition, And likely to Suffer in Several Refpects if Speedy Care be not taken for him. As he belongs to Watertown the Selectmen Account themfelves in Duty bound to take Some care for him and provide Such Clothing for him as may prevent his Suffering and so of his becoming a greater Charge to ye Town. Agre'd to procure for him a Coat Jacket a pr Briches two Shirts a pr of Stockins & a pr of Shoos he being Deftitute of evry thing of Clothing fit to cover his Nackednefs. Agre'd that m' Oliver Livermore & m' Eben' Thatcher take the Care to procure the things abovesd. In the firft place to Inquire whether they can procure wt may be Sutable at ye Second hand; If not such Cloth as is Sutable for Coat and Jacket to keep him warm and Leather briches what triming &c as is Necessary and to do it as soon as may bee. The Selectmen Confidering the Many Complaints that have been made to them what a Trouble

[51] the Sd Coollidge is where he comes and the Dainger they are in by Reafon of his Lying in their Barns for fear of fire or other Mifchief. the Selectmen Apprehending that it will be beft for ye sd Coollidge and for the Town that He be in Some family where he may be taken care of & keept from Rambling abt. and So kept from diftroying wt is got for him.
Accordingly the Selectmen Appointed to meet at David Coollidges on fryday the 1st of Decembr. Next at four clock after Noon, in order to Confider where to git a place and agre'd to give Publick Notice that if any perfon is inclined to take him that they meet ye Selectmen at ye time and place aforesd.
Decd. 1. 1749. The Selectmen meet at David Coollidges according to Appointmt. But no Perfon Appeared to treat with them Relating to Sam1 Coollidge.
The Selectmen being Informed by ye Widw. Becks that She had taken in a woman (a Stranger) out of pity and Compafsion who was Sick at her houfe, the Selectmen went to see how the matter was, and found a poor miserable woman there who if she had not been taken in by ye sd widw. had bin in danger of perifhing. The Selectmen Incouraged ye widw. to take proper care for her, and as ye Selectmen were Informed that she had some money and other things they advifed the Widw. to See & git her pay from her for ye Trouble she was at.

Mary Maddocks being deftitute of houfe or home for this winter Seafon ( People not careing to take her in to set her to work as in warm wether) She being at prefent at Chriftopher Grants, the Sd Grant being willing to Entertain her for her work if She did Enough to pay for her board, and if not to be Alow'd by the Town what sld be wanting. He ye sd Grant prudently keeping her to work or finding work for her till further Order. He keeping a fair and true Acct of Her Earnings, and to Lay the Same before the Selectmen, And If her Work or Earnings do not amount to Reafonable boarding to be alow'd by the Town what is Reafonable over and above her Earnings.
[52] At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at the Houfe of Jonas Bond Esq. on the Eighth Day of Jany. 1749. Upon a Mefsage Sent to the Selectmen from one of ye Grand jury of the County That the Town of Watertown was in Danger of A Prefentmt. on Acct of Sam Coollidge his Runing abt & being Mifcheivs &c The Selectmen Agre'd to inform the Grand jury of ye Circumftances of ye sd Coollidge and what the Selectmen had Done in behalf of ye Town for him, and, and what further Steps they have Agre'd to that he might be taken care of that so he might not make Such Difturbance as he has done. That so the Town might not be prefented Agre'd further to Inquire of Such Gentle. of Charlitown as are propr to See whether sd Coollidge may be got into their Work houfe upon Equiable Terms. and If they fail there then to Make One Addrefs more to ye Overfeeres of ye Poor in Bofton to Se If he could upon Reafonable Terms be got into their work Houfe for Some short time at Left till his cafe cld. be Laid before the Town.

(17) For the Town to Manifest their mind, what they will have done with Samuel Coollidge, and done for him, under his Prefent Difficult Circomftances so as to prevent Extroordy. (19) To know the mind of the Town whether they will Choofe and Impower a Com:tee or their Reprefentative to joine with Commtees. or the Reprefentatives of Wefton and Waltham to Petition the Great & General Court in behalf of Watertown, Wefton & Waltham for a Grant of Some of the unapropriated Lands belonging to ye Province, To Enable ye sd. Three Towns the better to Defray the great Charge they are Annually at in Maintaining the Great Bridge over Charles River in Watertown. (20) for the Town to have a Lift of Jurymen, with a new Addition thereto, Laid before them and for the Town to Accept thereof If ya See meet, And for ye Town to make An Addition to the Superiour Box. (21) To know the mind of ye Town whether they will Choofe and Appoint a man to take care of ye fence abot ye Buring place to keep up sd Fence to prevent Creatures Gitting in perticulerly Swine gitting in and Rooting down the tops of ye Graves, and to take up the Young Trees that are growing up in sd Buring place which in time may Discomode the Same, and whether He yt is Appointed and takes the Care abovesd. Shall have for sd Service, what grafs be got therein by Mowing; and not to feed any therein. (22) To hear the Requeft of M' Sam1. Jenifon for Some Releaf Refpecting his Sifter Sufanna Murch & for the Town to Act their pleafure with Relation thereto.

Voted and Granted or Alowed for the Support of the School this year the Sum of Two hundred and fifteen Pound and the Remains of Eighty five pounds of ye Laft Years Grant for ye School (not Improved) One hundred pounds there of to be paid out of ye Intereft money, and one hundred and fifteen pounds old Tener to be Afsefsed.
