Upon a Motion made and Seconed, a previous Vote was put, vizt. Whether it is the Mind of ye Town That the Perfon who Shall be Chofen to Reprefent the Town at the Gen1. Court Abovesd. That without He upon his being Chofen shall imme- diatly Declare that he will Serve the Town Gratis, or that if He shall receive Any Wages for his Service that He will pay the Same into the Town Treafurey for the Ufe of the Town, and without He do thus Declare his choice shall be Look't upon as Nul and Void, and the Town proceed to a Nother Choice and So till one Accept on Said Terms .- And the Vote paft in the Affirmative


Then the Voters were called upon to bring in their Votes for a Reprefentative And after the Votes were brot. in, Sorted and Numbred it Appeared by the Votes that Mr John Hunt was Chofen to Represent the Town at ye Great & Gen! Afsembly Above said, by the Majer part of the Voters prefent. who De- clared his Acceptance on the terms propofed in the above previous Vote. And took the Oath Required to be taken relating to ye paper bills of Credit on ye Neighbour Provinces referred to in ye Return on ye back of ye precipt. )


At a General Town Meeting of the Freeholders & other Inhabtents of Watertown Quallified to Vote in Town Affairs Regulerly Afsembled at ye Publick Meeting Houfe in Sd. Town on Munday the 18th. Day of May AD. 1752.

Voted and Chofe the prefent Selectmen to be sd. Committee who are Impowred to sell sd piece of Land, they following the Directions the Town Shall give to them. Then the Vote was put Whether it is the Mind of the Town that the Method the Committee abovesd. Shall take in Selling the abovesd. piece of Land, Shall be to poft the Sale up Some Convenant time before hand at the Publick Houfes at sd. Town And Apoint in the Notifications of sd. Sale a time for sd. Sale, and then put it up either in whole or in part, and the Higeft bidder to have it, And the Committee to give Conveyances of ye same in the name of ye Town to Such Perfon or Perfons who shall Appear in a fair and Reguler Manner to be the higheft bidder he or they pay- ing Down the Money bidden for the Same, or giving Sufficient Security for the Same to the Town to the Acceptence of ye Com- mittee. Whereas there was an Ancient Grant made by the Great and General Court to Watertown off 1500 Acres of Midow which has not Yet been Satisfyed or taken up, and Whereas Wat- ertown Wefton & Waltham (all origanally Watertown) have been at Very great coft and Charge in Building and Rebuildings and Repairings of ye Great Bridge over Charles River in Water- town and ever like to be under Such a heavy and growing Charge if relief cant be Some way Obtained, upon wch Confiderations whether it is the mind of the Town to chofe and Impower their Reprefentative to joine with the Reprefentatives of Wefton & Waltham, And in the Names and behalf of sd Watertown Wefton & Waltham to Petition the Great & General Court for releaf in sd. premifses prayind sd. Court to Grant to said Towns So much of the Unapropriated Lands belonging to this Province as they in their Wifdom Shall judge Equivolent to Sd. Grant of Medow, and Adquate to ye Great Burden they Lye under relating to sd. Bridge that ye sd Three Towns may be the better enabled to bear their hevy Burden by which the Publick enjoy a great benefit & Advantage, or that the sd. Honourable Court in their great wifdom wld. otherwife releave them the three Towns abovesaid. And ye Vote paft in the Affirmative.

The Selectmen Agree'd that there be Two Shifts and a Peticote provided for the Widw. Deliverance Webb. and that Mrs. Mercy Coollidge be Defired to get them .- Agreed alfo to go to the Minifteral houfe on Thursday ye Eighteenth Inftant to View the Same, and See what repairs is Necessary to be be made and that Mr Benjn. Hafting who is a Houfewright be Defired to meet ye Selectmen at sd. Houfe.


The Selectmen on the 18th. of June 1752 According to Agreemt. went to View the Miniftral Houfe and upon View found So much Necessary to be done to the houfe and Barn that they Agreed to call the Town together in Sepr. Nex and to Lay the Matter relating to the sd Houfe & Barn before the Town for their Confideration & Determination relating to ye premises.


At a Meeting of the Selectmen at ye Dwelling Houfe of Joseph Mafon on the Eleventh Day of Auguft 1752. The Selectmen having on ye 18th. of June Laft View'd the Minifteral Houfe and Barn and found them in Such a Condition that they thought it proper to Lay it before the Town for their Determin- ation and did then Agree that there Should be a Meeting called some time in Sep' next for that End. The Selectmen do therefore Now Agree, And Order the Clerk to Isue out Warrants Directed to the Conftables to Warn the freeholders and other Inhabts. of Watertown Quallified to Vote in Town Affairs to Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in sd Town on Munday the


Eighteenth


[92] Eighteenth Day of Sepr. next at three of the Clock afternoon for ye Ends following vizt. (1) To Chofe a Moderator for Said Meeting. (2) To hear the Report of the Selectmen Relating to the Repairing of the Miniftral Houfe and Barn (3) For the Town to Manifest what Repairs Shall be Made to the Minifteral Houfe for the Security and Safe preferving of the Same, and that it may be more Comfortable for our Revrend Paftor. (4) Whereas the old Barn Standing on the Minifteral place is Very poor and judged not worth Repairing. To know the Mind of ye Town whether they will Build a New Barn on the Minifteral place for the Ufe thereof and if they See caufe to Build then to Determine on the Dementions that it Shall be off, and when to be finifhed .- And if the Town Shall Agree to Repair the Minifteral Houfe and Build a Barn as abovesd. Then (5) to make a Grant of Money that Shall be judged Sufficient to Effect sd. Repairs and Building, to be Afsefsed and Collected with all proper Speed, and to do any other thing or things that may be thought proper and Expedent, to forward sd. Repairs and Building.


(6) Whereas there is a Small piece of Mowing Land &c to be Sold Adjoining to the Minifteral place, which is thought May

Accommodate the sd. Minifteral place, To know the Mind of the Town whether they will purchafe the Same, or any part thereof, to be Laid to the Minifteral Lot the better to Accomodate the Same, and to be for the Ufe of the Miniftry, And for the Town to Act their Pleafure relating thereunto, and if the Town See meet to purchafe then to do any thing or things that may be Necessary to be done for the Effecting of the Same. (Warrants were Isued out Accordingly ) -


Deacon Sam1 Fisk having Related to one or more of ye Selectmen that M' Sam1 Coollidge Schoolmafter (who some time since came to his houfe to Board) was So difordred that He defired that the Selectmen wld. take care to provide another place to board him at.


The Selectmen at this Meeting took this Matter relating to mr Coollidge in to Confideration and they are of Oppinion that m' Coollidge at prefent is not capable of Managing the School as it ought to be. Therefore they Agree that the School be Shut up for the prefent, And if the sd. Mr Coollidge Shall Con- tinue uncapble of Keeping the School, then to proceed to provide Another Schoolmafter. The Selectmen judging M' Sam1 Whitney (with whom sd Coollidge by agrmt of ye selectmen formerly boarded ) to be a perfon Very Sutable to take the care of ye sd. Mr Coollidge under his prefent Circumftances. The sd. m' Whitney having (when applyed to) manifefted to Some of ye Selectmen that He wld. take the sd. Mr Coollidge again upon Reafonable Confideration (having firit a Tryal how he Conducts before he Concludes upon a Confideration) The Selectmen Accordingly Agre'd that ye sd M' Coollidge SId. be put to ye sd M' Whitney to board and to be under his care. And under his prefent Circum- ftances to be Reftrained from Runing about from Houfe to Houfe which practice has been thought very hurtfull to him, and if no other Methods will prevail, then to reftrain him by Chaining of him that So if pofsable He may be brot to his right Mind so as to be Servicable again. The Selectmen alfo Agree that sd. Mr Whitney Shall be Reafonably Satisfied by the Town for His care, trouble & Boarding ye sd. Mr Coollidge. and that He take the care of ye sd Mr Coollidge as abovesd till further Order of ye Selectmen. The Selectmen Agree that what is juftly due to M' Coollidge for keeping the School for time paft (after his Juft debts are paid, for cloths taken up for him &c) be improved in Anfwering for his Board where it is already or hereafter may be due. and that ye Selectmen take ye Care to git him to ye sd. Mr Whitneys to be under his care as abovesd.


[93] At a Meeting of ye Selectmen on the 19th. Day of Auguft 1752 At m' Jonan Bemis's In order to treat wth. mr Sam1. Baldwin, to keep the Grammer and English School in Watertown (M' Sam1. Coollidge Continuing uncapable) Mr

Baldwin being prefent, The Selectmen Agreed with Him to keep sd. School for one Quarter of a Year and to have as a Reward from the Town for his Service after the Rate of forty Pounds Pr Year Lawfull money, The sd. M' Baldwin to Board himfelf, and the Quarter to begin the Twenty fourth of this Inftant August. To wch. ye sd. Mr Sam1. Baldwin Agre'd and Confented. -


At a General Town meeting of ye Freeholders and other In- habts. of Watertown Regulerly Afsembled at ye Publick Meeting Houfe in Sd. Town on the Eighteenth Day of Sepr. AD. 1752.


Voted and Chofe Joseph Mafon Esq' Moderator of sd. Meeting. Then the Selectmen made a Varble Report to ye Town Relating to the Miniftral Houfe and Barn. After which


The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town that the Repairs to be done at the Minifteral Houfe for the prefent be to New Cover or Shingle the Roof on the Backfide or Wefterly & Northerly Sides of ye Roof together with Mending the gutters and Windows. And the Vote paft in the Affirmative.


Then after the Matter was Debated relating to ye Barn on ye Miniftral place.


The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town to build a New Barn on the Minifteral place for ye Ufe thereof. And ye Vote paft in ye Affirmative


The Vote was put whether it is the mind of ye Town that ye sd. Barn to be Built on ye Minifteral place shall be of ye following Dementions vizt. Thirty feet Square and fourteen feet Poft. And the Vote paft in the Affirmative.


The Vote was put whether it is the mind of the Town That Sd. Barn Should be Compleated and finifhed by the firft of June Next.


And ye Vote paft in the Affirmative.


Then the Vote was put whether it is the mind of ye Town To Grant the sum of forty Six pounds 13/4 Lawfull money for the Carrying on the Repairs and Building which the Town has Voted to be Done.


And the Vote paft in the Affirmative .- Then upon Some Confiderations a motion was made & Seconded to Adjourn this Meeting for a fortnight. Accordingly the Vote was put whether it is the Mind of the Town to Adjourn this Meeting and ye Remaining buifnefs to this Day fourtnight Three Clock Afternoon at this place.

The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of ye Town, To Appropriate ye following Sums of money to be Improved for the Repairing the Minifteral Houfe and Building a Barn on ye Miniftral place as Voted by the Town ye Laft Meeting on ye 18t.h of Sepr Laft. Vizt. Two Province Bills which were paid into the Treafurey, by m' John Hunt Laft May Meeting vizt. one of 20 Dollers, the other of 28 Dolers & 2/3 amounting to fourteen pounds Twelve Shillings. alfo the Sixteen pounds in Col. Wm. Brattles Hands belonging to the Town which was fines paid to him by Men Impreft by his order vizt. Wm. Coollidge Nehemiah Mafon & Silas Bright. alfo Two pounds 13/4 of what Remains of what was Recd. of Coll. Brattle of fines before the Above mentioned. alfo four pounds 18/8 due to the Town from the Truftees. alfo a Note in the Treafurey given by M' Henry Spring of 13/4 Alfo a Bond of Mr Jona". [94] The Vote was put whether it is the mind of the Town That the Sum of Three Pounds Nine Shillings & four pence Lawfull Money be paid out of the Treafurey to Compleat the forty Six pounds 13/4 Granted for the Repairing the Minifteral Houfe and building a Barn on ye Minifteral place. And ye Vote paft in the Affirmative.


The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of the Town to Choofe a Committee to take Effectual Care and See to the Repairing of ye Minifteral Houfe and the Building of a Barn on the Minifteral place as Voted to be done; and they to Ufe their best Skill and Care, and take Such Methods for the Accomplifhing of the Same as in their Judgmt. Shall be moft for the Towns Intreft.


And the Vote paft in the Affirmative. Voted and Chofe the prefent Selectmen to be the Commtee for ye Ends abovesd.


Then the Sixth Article in the Warrant was Red to the Town; and after Debate thereon.


The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of the Town to Choofe a Committee to Enquire what the Land Mentioned in sd Article may be had for and Make Report at next March Meeting. and ye Vote paft in ye Negative

The Selectmen Agreed and Defired m' Jona". Bemis to Cart some Gravil as Soon as may be on to ye Great Bridge


The Selectmen Defired Joseph Mafon & Jonas Bond to go to M' Samt Coollidges and See after the Towns Amminifion Lodged there and See and Stur the Powder, and Defire m' Coollidge to take good care of ye sd. Powder and to turn it once a month or at left once in two months and to be reafonably Satisfyed for his trouble. -


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at the Houfe of Joseph Mafon Esq'. on the on the first Day of Dec'. AD. 1752. Some of ye Rails and Posts of ye Great Bridge being brok down, Agreed that m' Benjn. Haftings be Defired forthwith to put up Pofts and Rails where they be wanting. Defired m' Jonan Bemis to See & procure Stuff for the same. and Afsift m' Hafting in puting them up.


The Widw. Webb wanting 2 Aprons & a wefcot & pr of shoo's Agreed that Mrs Coollidge be Defired to get her a Waft- coat and two Aprons. & Defired Joseph Mafon to procure her a pr of shoos. Ordred the Treafurer to furnifh mrs Coollidge with money to procure ye Waftcoat & Aprons.


At sd. Meeting it was Agreed by ye Maj'. part of ye Selectmen to try Mr Sam1 Coollidge once more in the School He appearing to be very well Compofed again, and it is hopefull he may anfwer the end of a Schoolmafter. Agreed to meet again at m' Bemis the fourth Day of this Inftant Decembr. at four of ye clock after- noon and ye Selectmen Defired M' Bemis to Aquaint Mr. Coollidge that ye Selectmen Defire that He wld. be prefent at sd meeting.


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at m' Jonan. Bemis on the 4th. of Dec. A.D. 1752 Mr Sam1. Coollidge was prefent, and the Selectmen gave him a thorough talk relating to his paft Conduct, and what He might Expect if he did not behave well in the School for the future, they Declared unto him that they put him into the School again for Tryal with out Setting any time and if he behaved well He Sld. not be wronged, and that He was to begin the School the Eleventh Day of this Decr. Mr Coollidge Complained that He wanted a winter Coat. Defired m' Bemis to git him a Bare Skin Coat and git M' Meed to make it. And to give ye Selectmen an Acct. thereof-


[95] At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at Joseph Harringtons on the 31st. of January 1753. The Selectmen Signed an Order Dated ye 4 of Decr 1752 for the payment of m' Dan11. Baldwin the Sum of Ten pounds for keeping the School three months.


Ordred the paymt. of Ten Pounds Twelve Shillings for Metearls and work, for the repairing the Minifteral Houfe So far as it has been Reparied.


The Selectmen being Informed and Notifyed that there are Several perfons come to Refide in Watertown vizt. one Ann Mickel

a Diftracted Woman Taken in by m' James Baily who came laft from Boston abot. ye Second of Decembr. Laft alfo Two Children vizt. John Sloper & Olive Sloper taken in by Ebenezer Thatcher who came Laft from Boston & came to him the 22 of Decembr. Laft


Alfo the Widw. Abigail Richardfon and her Son Abijah Richard- fon they were taken in by Ezra Richardfon who lives in a Houfe belonging to John Kembal jun'. the sd. Widw. Came Laft from Lexington Some time in May Laft and the sd. Abijah came Laft from as ye sd Kembal Informed the Selectmen. The Selectmen Refufing to Accept of the above Named Perfons to be Inhabts. of Watertown They Accordingly Ordred the Clerk to Isue out a Warrant Directed to one of ye Conftables to Warn the Perfons above Named to Depart out of Watertown.


Whereas the Selectmen has hereto fore Ordred the Treafurer to pay what was Due to m' Sam1 Coollidge for keeping the School one Year to the 20th. of April Laft paft to him or his order. But the Circumftances of ye sd Coollidge has been such Since sd order was given, that the Selectmen do now Agree and order the Treafurer not to Anfwer any order of ye sd. Coollidge or Acct. before He firft Lay the Same before ye Selectmen for their Ap- probation. The Selectmen Agreed that Jonas Coollidge be paid out of what is Due to his Brother Sam1. for what He procured for him, and that Mr. Jonan. Bemis be paid for what He got by order of ye Selectmen at m' Goulds for sd. Coollidge and that Dean. Sam1. Fisk be paid his Acct. of Three pounds Eight Shillings & 8d34 out of wt is Due to sd. Coollidge if Enough remains, or so far as it will go towards sd. Acct.


The Selectmen Agree to meet again on the Twelf Day of Febry : Next at M' John Hunts at four clok after noon. Mr Joseph Harrington was Defired to aquaint m' Jofiah Stearns, that ye Selectmen defire that He wld. meet with them at sd. time & place.


The Clerk Isued out a Warrant to warn the above named perfons to Depart out of Watertown all but Ann Mickel who Deceafed before the warrant was Sent to the Officer-

The Selectmen Ordred the Clerk to Isue out Warrants Directed to the Conftables of Watertown for the Warning of a Town Meeting of ye Inhabts. of said Town to be on the fifth Day of March Next at 9 of the Clock in the morning at the Publick Meeting Houfe in sd. Town for the Ends following. vizt. (1) To Choofe a Moderator (2) To Choofe Selectmen a Town Clerk & Treafurer a Conftable or Conftables Afsefsors & all Such other

(5) To know the mind of the Town whether Swine Shall run at Large this Year under the regulations of ye Law in such cafe. (6) To Hear The Town Treafurers Accts. and for the Town to pafs upon them. (7) For the Town to Appropriate their Intreft Money Coming to the Town this prefent Year the year beginning the Eleventh of December Laft. (8) For the Town to Grant an Honourable Salary for ye Revd. Mr Storer for the Year Enfuing the year beginning the firft Day of March Next. (9) To Grant Money for the Support of the Grammer & Englifh School for this prefent Year. And to Order the Conftables to Notify Such Perfons to whom the Town is Indebted to bring in their Accts. to ye Selectmen at the Houfe of ye Widw. Mary Learneds on Wednesday the 28th. of Feby. Currant at three of the Clock After Noon in Order to there being Laid before the Town At their Annual Meeting. And alfo to Notify the Surveyers of High Ways who were Collectors to meet ye Selectmen on the sd. 28th. Day of Feby. in Order to make up their Accts. with the Selectmen.

[97] At a meeting of ye Selectmen at the Houfe of ye Widw. Mary Learned on the 28th. Day of Feby. 1753. For the Taking in of ye Acct. of thofe Perfons the Town is indebted to. The Accts. Taken in are as follows. vizt.
