1. JOHN ADAMS, b. Credition, England, 1685, came to America about 1700; settled in that part of Wrentham, Mass., now known as South Franklin. He m. Sept. 24, 1713, Sarah Fairbanks. Their son, John Adams, Jr., b. June 18, 1715; d. May 30, 1793; m. Rachel Adams. They had son, *John3, b. 1748; d. Aug. 1836; m. (1) Naomi Pratt; m. (2) Eunice Moulton; m. 2. JOHN MASON' ADAMS (John3, John2, John1) b. Mar. 5, 1799; d. Wal- pole, Nov. 8, 1857; bur. in S. In 1822 he was taxed in Gilsum; m. Oct. 27, 1824, Ruth Carpenter, dau. of Ezra, q. v., and settled at No. 158 in S. and in one or two years moved to Walpole. A farmer, deacon in the church in Chris- tion Hollow in Walpole, 1st Sergt. 6th Co., 20th Regt., N. H. militia in 1827; after d. of Jesse Streeter, 1835, he was appointed guardian of his son Willard Streter, q. v. Ruth, the widow, res. in Walpole with her ch. until Apr. 1864, when she and the younger ones moved to the middle west, following some of the older ones. She d. 3. ARTEMAS' ADAMS (Dea. J. Mason', John3, John2, John1) taught school in S. when a young man, and later in Illinois. He m. Mar. 24, 1852, Sarah B. Britton. They res. in Honey Creek, Ill., where his uncle, John Carpenter (q. v.), also res., but returned East in 1853 and was living at No. 106; the following year he was Supt. of schools in S. being employed in mill at No. 112. Subsequently he and his brother John ran a saw and grist mill at Cut- tingsville, Vt., after which he returned west. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted as a private in Co. K. 11th Regt., Wis. Vols. He rose to the rank of 1st lieut. and was staff officer for two years. He was with Gen. U. S. Grant through the siege of Vicksburg. After serving nearly four years with impaired health he resigned and was discharged. He settled in Belle Plaine, Wis., where he served as town clerk, etc. In 1861 he was res. of Neenah, Wis. Ch. b .:

He was gradu- ated from Amherst College, 1835, and East Windsor Theological Seminary, 1838. Apr. 28, 1840, he was ordained pastor of the Congl. church in Surry, where he labored three years, when he went to Roxbury where he remained seven years. Rev. Mr. Adams' next charge was at Gilsum where he labored until his death. The following is from the church records in Gilsum: "March 20th, 1864. This day departed this life much lamented, our beloved Pastor, Rev. Ezra Adams, aged 54, having had this church under his charge Four- teen years."
Of him it is said: In early life he was sickly and he considered that his life was prolonged only by his strictly temperate habits. He was a good scholar and a diligent student; he was early in life the subject of religious impressions, and as pastor and minister of Christ he was sincere and zealous to a marked degree.

1. SAMUEL1 ALLEN the first American ancestor, b. about 1588, came from Braintree, Essex Co., England, to Cambridge, Mass., 1632; removed 1635 to Windsor, Conn., where he d. and was bur. Apr. 28, 1648, aged 60 years; leav- ing a w. Ann. He was a farmer, a man of public spirit, and honored by his fellow citizens with positions of trust. He was a brother of Col. Matthew Allen of Cambridge, Mass., Windsor and Hartford, Conn., also brother of Dea. Thomas Allen of Middletown, Conn. His wid. m. (2) William Hurl- bert of Northampton, Mass., and d. Nov. 13, 1687. They had six ch. One was Nehemiah Allen the ancestor of Gen. Ethan Allen (1744-1789) the hero in the Rev. war in Vt. Another son was

5. ABEL5 ALLEN (Samuel4, Samuel3, John2, Samuel') b. Windsor Aug. 14, 1733; d. S. Aug. 18, 1808. He was one of the Proprietors of Gilsum (now S.), and settled at No. 68 about 1761. In 1766 he was on a committee to lay-out and clear highways in said town; in 1770 was chosen constable. During the exciting times in 1777 he was chosen one of a committee of five "to state things as they are" in S. He m. Jan. 1, 1756, Elizabeth Chapin, b. Enfield, Conn., July 11, 1736; d. S. 7. PHINEAS® ALLEN (Abel", Samuel', Samuel3, John2, Samuel1) was sex- ton, 1788, an office which he and his s. Phineas Jr., held more or less con- stantly for about forty years. Tradition says "he tended mill at the Bridge (in Gilsum), was very poor, and wore wooden shoes." He returned to S. about 1787 where he lived until d. Phineas Sr., or Jr. (perhaps both), lived at No. 62. He m. Jan. 25, 1787 Rachel Puffer (or Rachel Platts) b. July 21, 1760; d. S. Nov. 24, 1852. After his d. his wid. and two daus., Rachel7 and Roxa™, lived for years at No. 70. They cared for the old meeting-house a few years and received from the town $4.50 per annum. At time of d. Phineas® was on U. S. pension roll for Rev. service in Conn., q. v. Ch. b .:
