Dr. JOSHUA JEWETT3 JOHNSON (Dr. Lewis2, Amos1) early in life lost his father and went to live in Berlin, Mass., with his grandfather where he was educated in the schools, and afterwards at the Frye school in Boston. When about 17 years of age he was placed in a store to learn to be a merchant; this life, however, was distasteful to him and as soon as he could act for him- self, he began to fit himself for the practice of medicine.
An opportunity came, and he studied at Northfield Academy, Amherst, with Dr. Bartlett of Concord and Dr. Amos Twitchell of Keene for a year, also was in Chelsea (Mass.) Hospital, and in hospitals in London and Edinburgh, fin- ally taking his examination and receiving his diploma at Dartmouth.
He began the practice of his profession at Northboro, Mass., in 1857, and came to Keene where he remained until 1866 when he returned to Northboro .* He m. 1840 Mary Ware Allen.

This name appears in many different forms, as Josceline, Jocelyn, Jostlin, Joslyn, etc. The name has been known in England for several centuries and the records in the Tower of London show that Lincolnshire was the first home of the first Joscelines in England, and for 300 years thereafter the family re- sided in Cornwall, Essex, Hartford, Kent and Surrey. A descendant of one of those numerous branches of the family and the first of the name to come to America was:

Dak., Mar. 20, 1902, and sold the same the following De- cember and just doubled on his investment, and since that time he has been as- sociated with the First National Bank at Frederick; also dealing quite exten- sively in real estate in both the Dakota's and Montana. In recent years he has dealt in a chattel business, and usually has over $50,000.00 invested, se- cured on live stock and crops. 3. JASPER NEWTON® KELLER (Adam2, Jacob1) b. Burlington, Iowa, Jan. 22, 1846; d. in S. Sept. 22, 1922; res. in S. summers and in Boston or southern Cal., in winter. When 16 years of age he left his home in Ohio and with a train of wagons and 84 head of horses crossed the great plains for California; arriving at Austin, Nev., he left the train and for the year following was employed in mining in that place, when he went to California. In 1865 he came to New York by steamer, via Isthmus of Panama; soon after he went to Utah, thence to California again, but returned to Ogden, Utah, where he was employed by the Union Pacific railroad (then being built through the Rocky mountains), and as telegraph operator. He was also operator for a time for the Western Union Telegraph Co.
Through his effort a franchise was obtained in 1880 and one of the first telephone companies was established west of the Rocky mountains, at Ogden. He sold his interest in this company 1881, and soon after obtained a franchise for Texas and Arkansas telephone company (S. W. T. & T. Co.). He re- mained with that company until Nov. 1883, when he was appointed General Manager of the New England Telegraph & Telephone Company. Not long after he became General Manager of this company he was appointed to ex- amine and make a careful estimate of the numerous small isolated telephone companies then engaged in business in the several New England states, prior to the taking over the same by the N. E. Tel. & Tel. Co. With horse and car- riage Mr. Keller travelled over all the N. E. states-even passing down through Surry-in the interest of this work. He remained with the above Company until Nov. 1913, when as its President, he retired. During his management the gigantic telephone system of New England came into existence. Mr. Kel- ler purchased the Alfred T. Bachelder estate in S. and rem. from Newton, Mass., to No. 16, Jan. 1, 1904.
He m. at Wooster, O., Oct. 25, 1870 Betty Scott Henshaw, b. Bunker Hill, Va., May 9, 1852; d. Brookline, Mass., March 5, 1923; dau. of George Warren and Rebecca (Montgomery) Henshaw.

A man by the name of Kelley lived at No. 118 after the Butler family. He was m. and had three children. He was here prior to 1835, according to tra- dition, n. f. r.
KELLOGG
1. HENRY KELLOGG, an iron-smith, came to S. 1827, from Leverett, Mass. He bought land, built a dam across the Ashuelot river, and erected a shop at No. 148 in which he had a trip hammer. In 1834 he was taxed for two buildings (probably a house and the shop), and rem. from S. 1835. Pos- sibly he was a s. of Joseph Kellogg of Leverett, 1790.

KENDALL
1. SILAS' KENDALL of Lowell, Mass., b. 1806; d. S. Sept. 9, 1886; aged 80 years, 2 mo., unm. When a young man he was in the employ of Mial Davis, Tyngsboro, Mass, He was a cousin to Warren Carpenter, q. v., and was taxed in S. (more or less) from 1858 until about the time of his d. He willed the First Bapt. church at Nashua $700.00 and $500.00 to the Bapt. church at Tyngsboro. The will was contested, at which time he had two nephews living at Charlestown, N. H., Joseph K. and John T. Hatch.
