MCCURDY


The MacKirdy, MacCurdy, McCurdy family originated in Scotland. Five brothers of the name, "left Scotland to avoid religious persecution" and at the risk of their lives crossed the North Passage of the Irish Sea in an open boat, and settled in County Antrim, Ireland, about 1666.


1. SAMUEL1 McCurdy, probably a gr-son of one of the five brothers, was b. Ulster, Co. Antrim about 1721; d. S. Jan. 5, 1808. He came to America 1771/72 and after a visit with his brother John of Lyme, Conn., settled at No. 12 in the spring of 1772. Here he was an inn-keeper, being succeeded by his s. John2. He m. in Ireland May 21, 1747, Elizabeth Gray, b. Ireland 1722/23; d. S. Dec. 22, 1808. In their old age they lived in the house ( No. 13) which stood on his old farm.

3. JOHN' MCCURDY (Samuel1) writes "I sailed from Larne (Ireland) Nov. 1771, and Landed at New York the 15th of January 1772." Probably named after his uncle John McCurdy who educated him at his own expense. He served in Rev. war, q. v .; was lieutenant as early as 1783, probably in the militia; moderator, 1797-99; selectman, 1791-92; constable 1785 and repre- sented S., Gilsum and Sullivan in the General Court in 1794. In 1786 he purchased his father's farm (No. 12) which he sold Oct. 13, 1812. He kept tavern in his house, opened a store and blacksmith shop, mentioned elsewhere in this work. He finally was "driven out of business" and left town. In 1820 he settled in W. Concord, Vt., Francis Hathorn bought his pew in the meeting house Apr. 22, 1809, No. 9, the 2nd east of the pulpit on the north wall, for $10.00. He m. 2. CHARLES2 MACUMBER (Edward A.1) b. Clinton, Mass., Apr. 16, 1853. He first came to S. about 1883 and has since kept his voting res. in this town, although being employed elsewhere much of the time. For over 30 years he has made his home with E. E. Wilbur at No. 184. In returning home from No. 186 in the evening of the famous "March 1888 blizzard" he became be- wildered in the blinding snow, lost his way and spent the night in the woods. The next morning he discovered he was on the "Buffum lot" not far from the. Pond road, with badly chilled feet; he is unm.

MADERO


A Spanish family by the name of Madero were exiled from Mexico some 45 or 50 years ago and lived in N. Y. City. Tradition says they were very wealthy and formerly lived in the City of Mexico. Lewis B. Munroe became interested in the ch. and they came to S. with him for two or three seasons, while he tutored them in English. There were three brothers and a cousin of theirs, named Madena; all between 12 and 20 years of age at that time, and while here they lived at Horace B. Shaw's farm at the Corner. One of the boys is said to have been killed in Mexico within a few years.

1. DAVID MALCOLM b. Glarnis, Forfar Shire, Scotland; m. Eppie Doig.


2. ROBERT DOIG? MALCOLM b. Glarnis Feb. 9, 1843; d. Bellefourche, Butt Co., S. Dak. He was a stone-cutter; came to America and landed at N. Y. City, March 1886, followed by his family in Sept. 1887. They settled at Lincoln, Neb. He m. in Scotland June 1865, Jean Mortimer.


3. GEORGE3 MALCOLM (Robert D.2, David1) b. Dundee, Scotland, Nov. 16, 1873. He arrived in Philadelphia, Penn., Sept. 1887, going to Lincoln with parents; thence to Bellefourche where he lived for 25 years, when he rem. to No. 83 in Sept. 1916.
