rank of Major, being stationed at Washington, D. C. He paid off the soldiers in the Army of the Potomac, sometimes going into the camps in Virginia. Maj. Allen was discharged from the service at the close of the war and returned to his home in Newport and continued the practice of his profession with marked success. Previous to the war he published for two years a paper called the "Sullivan Republican"; he also did some land surveying.

He was Judge of Probate for Sullivan County from Jan. 1867, to July 1874; Register of Bankruptcy, 1867 till 1876 when he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of N. H. by Gov. Cheney, and held this position until March 1893 when he resigned on account of ill health.

Judge Allen's health began to fail in 1892 and in the winter of 1892 and '93 he took a trip to Cuba and Florida hoping to regain strength but he grad- ually failed and upon reaching New York City on his return he died in a hos- pital, Apr. 23, 1893.

Politically he was a staunch Republican; fraternally he was a Knight Tem- plar; religiously he was an Episcopalian, and socially he was kind and sym- pathetic.
