WILBUR

One of the many characters in early New England history was the founder of the family which now bears the surname of Wilbur-Wilber. During the first few generations in America the family spelled the name; Wildbore, Will- bur, Wildboar, Wilbore and Wildboare. We will use the form as given in the records. Owing to the numerous branches and incomplete records it is a diffi- cult family to compile. We give from our best authority.

1. SAMUEL1 WILDBORE b. in England; d. Sept. 29, 1656; perhaps in Taunton, Mass. It is believed he came to Massachusetts with his wife and several ch. before 1633. One authority states he is supposed to have come from the vicinity of Doncaster, Yorkshire, Eng. He was a free-man in Boston, Mass., 1633; was assessor of taxes, 1634; Nov. 20, 1637, with several other persons, he was disarmed, and given a license to depart from the colony, but for what cause, we know not. He took up his new place of abode at Portsmouth, R. I., where he is found Mar. 7, 1638. Late in life he removed to Taunton. He m. (1) in England, Ann , said to have been dau. of Thomas Bradford of Doncaster, Eng. In 1633 they were admitted to the church at Boston. He m. (2) Mrs. Elizabeth Lechford, widow of Thomas Lechford.

*There was a John Allen Whitney b. Westminster, Mass., Apr. 11, 1849; a s. of John Emerson and Cleora Whitney.
