6. Hon. WILLIAM® HAILE (John5, James4, Walter3, Richard2, Richard1) moved with his parents to Chesterfield when about 14 years of age; soon after he was taken into the family of Ezekiel P. Pierce Sr., of Chesterfield, where he remained until 21 years of age; in 1823 he entered Mr. Pierce's store as a clerk; 1828 he opened a store on his own account at the Centre Village; in 1834 or '35 he rem. to Hinsdale where he continued in the mercantile business until 1846, when he became interested in the lumber business.
Three years later he was a member of the firm "Haile & Todd," manufac- turers of cashmerettes. Subsequently the name of the firm was changed to "Haile, Frost & Co.," by which name it was known for many years. He took an active part in political matters; was representative from Hinsdale in the General Court most of the time between 1846 and '54; in the N. H. Senate 1854 and '55, of which body he was president the latter year. In 1857 and '58 he was elected Governor of New Hampshire. A photo cut of Gov. Haile is shown in Chesterfield History, and a life-size portrait on the walls in the N. H. Capitol.
In 1873 he rem. from Hinsdale to Keene where he built a fine residence and lived until his death. He m. at Chesterfield July 14, 1828 Sebrana Shaw Walker, b. Jan. 18, 1809. She was dau. of Azra and Lydia (Baker) Walker of Shirley, Mass., and Chesterfield.
