7. Rev. LUTHER JACOB FLETCHER (David", Joseph", Timothy4, Corpl. Samuel", Francis", Robert1) b. at Croydon, Nov. 25, 1818; d. at Franklin, Mass., Jan. 20, 1884; buried at Forest Lawn cemetery, Buffalo, N. Y. His father d. when Luther was fourteen years of age, and at the earnest request of his mother he was apprenticed to a blacksmith, but his love for books was stronger than his love for the anvil. Finally, at seventeen years of age his mother consented and his apprenticeship ceased. Two years later he became a school-master; subsequently he entered and was graduated from Norwich (Vt.) University.
He came to Surry in Nov. 1841 and lived at No. 132. In December of that year he began teaching one of the district schools; in Feb. 1842 he began preaching half of the time for one year for the Universalist Society; in March he opened a singing school; in Sept. he opened a Select School in the village with about 40 scholars which continued for eleven weeks. During the winter of 1842-43 Rev. Fletcher taught the district school, and a singing school; in March he began preaching in the village again.
He moved in Sept. 1843 to Swanzey Center and became the first principal of Mount Caesar Seminary which opened that fall.
In 1845 he rem. to Brattleboro, Vt., where he became pastor of the Uni- versalist church; thence to Cambridge and Lowell, Mass. After four years of service in the latter city he was induced to take up the study of law. Later he was appointed Commissioner of Insolvency, then Judge of Insolvency, a posi- tion which he held until this Court was merged into the Probate Court. He then re-entered the ministry and became pastor of the Second Universalist church of Lowell. Subsequently he labored at Bath and Gardiner, Me .; Brooklyn, N. Y .; Grand Rapids, Mich .; Buffalo and Ford Plains, N. Y., and finally at Franklin, Mass. The degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him by St. Lawrence University at Canton, N. Y.
Dr. Fletcher was a man highly endowed with physical, mental and spiritual gifts, who through his own efforts became a thorough and proficient English scholar. He was a pleasing teacher, an eloquent preacher and a logical thinker. He m. (1) Amanda Jennison who d. in Langdon Feb. 19, 1845, age 26 years; dau. of Levi Jennison of Alstead and Walpole. He m. Edward Fowler, son and heir of Sir Richard Q. Fowler is said to have entertained Queen Catharine in 1514. The Fowlers in this country are now quite numerous.

He em- barked on Mayflower at Southampton, Eng., Aug. 15, 1620, came to America with the first company of Pilgrims and landed at Plymouth, Mass. His wife and s. Samuel also came at same time. 8. SAMUEL FULLER (Joshua", Samuel", Barnabas5, Samuel', Samuel3, Edward“, Robert1) was a Rev. soldier from S. in war, q. v. It is said while at the battle of Bennington, "Samuel got out of powder, and was searching for some when he saw his father's powder horn on a body, and found that it was the corpse of his brother Joshua." At a town meeting, June 16, 1777:
"Voted that Samuel Fuller Shall be allowed as the Rest were if he Serves a man out of Surry." He was taxed in S. in 1800 and left that year, probably settled at Reading, Vt. He m. Esther

9. Capt. DAVID' FULLER (Joshua7, Samuel“, Barnabas®, Samuel', Sam- uel", Edward2, Robert1) served as Captain in the militia, and a private in the Rev. war, q. v. In 1780 his uncle, David Taylor, gave him a lot of land in Gil- sum and he went over the mountain every day to clear this land. He built a plank house where he and his bride settled Jan. 1782. He was a very ener- getic wilful man, and was sometimes called, "King David." He was tax col- lector in Gilsum, 1792. In 1802, Capt. David Fuller and Stephen White built the second grist-mill in Gilsum. This was on the Ashuelot river, half-a-mile down the river from the "Stone Bridge." White sold out his interest the next year and David sold out to Daniel Beverstock in 1806.
He had an encounter with a bear on Surry mountain when a young man, and he and old Jesse Dart, q. v., are said to have killed eight bears one Fall. See G. H. page 155, 157. He rem. to Jay, N. Y., about 1810. He is doubtless the David Fuller of Wilmington, N. Y., who was 80 years of age and was on the U. S. pension roll, 1840. In 1841 Capt. David Fuller was living at Keene, N. Y .; formerly of Gilsum .- K. S. He m. (1) Jan. 22, 1782 Elsea Gleason who d. May 20, 1790; m. (2) Feb. 22, 1792, Jerusha Adams, b. Sept. 25, 1774; d. Gilsum Aug. 31, 1792, dau. of Jonathan and Hannah (Yemmons) Adams of Hebron, Conn. He m. (3) Oct. 20, 1793, Orinda Bingham, b. Montague, Mass., July 10, 1772; d. ; dau. of John and Sibyll (Wright) Bingham of Windham, Conn., and Gilsum.
