4. WARREN WATKINS STONE (David') spent his boyhood in S. and when a young man went to Boston "to seek his fortune." For a while he was clerk for Joshua Seaver who was in the grocery business at the corner of Tremont and Ruggles streets. Early in 1841 he entered railroad work, first as fireman on the Boston & Providence R. R. which he followed three years, when he was promoted to engineer, and for six years ran between Boston and Mansfield. For about 10 years he was on the Boston & Provi- dence; in 1852 he came to Keene and became engineer on the Cheshire R. R. where he remained some 22 years.
During his experience as fireman he was in a wreck near Ruggles St. in Boston which confined him in the hospital for seven weeks; he fired the ex- press train from Mansfield to Boston which brought the first President's message ever delivered in Boston by express; at the opening of the Taunton & New Bedford R. R. he fired the engine under Engineer Leonard Crossman which ran the initial trip and took the officers of that road. Of those early days he states: The engines were crude and small; a running board on either side of the boiler, without shelter or protection served as a "cab" for the first three years; there were two coaches, built after the old time' stage coach, shackled to the engine with chains; the conductor rode on a high seat in front and applied the brake. During stormy weather it frequently was nec- essary to stop the train and re-spike the warped wooden rails. He was of a cheerful turn of mind; happy and content with a "chew" which kept his jaw in constant motion, resembling a chipmunk from which he was named "Chippy Stone." He m. Boston Sept. 20, 1842 Eliza Ann Francis; dau of John Francis, a rope-maker of Boston.

He lived at various places and at times was assisted by the town; it mattered little for the housewife to mend his clothes for he soon was in rags again. Often traveling about with but one side of his face shaved, he would enter a neighbor's house and ask for a "cup-of-tea-twiny." After drinking the tea he would always invert the saucer, on top of
