The Crane, Crain, Craine family is of England origin and it was a common name found in both Suffolk and Norfolk Counties, England, during the six- teenth century, and they are probably the ancestors of those of that name who came to America between 1625 and 1655. 8. ICHABOD® CRANE (Abiah5, Abiah4, John3, Lt. Jonathan2, Benjamin1) was a life long res. of S. For many years he lived on his father's old farm, No. 149; and late in life rem. to No. 39. He was one of the best farmers in town in his day, and accumulated quite a property for those times. In re- ligious sentiment he was a firm believer in the Congregational faith, and it was largely due to his financial aid that the present Congregational church was built in the village, and which was long known as "Crane's Church." He m. (1) Fanny Watts of Alstead b. 1789 (?); d. S. Mar. 22, 1842; m. (2) Clarissa Anderson of Walpole and after his d. she m. (2) Nov. 2, 1870 Emery Bragg, q. v. His will was contested and a portion of his property went to his heirs, viz: John W. Crane of Saratoga, N. Y .; Fanny Watts Godfrey; Nellie Ingalls and William C. Thompson. He was selectman, 1820. 9. JUSTUS® CRANE (Abiah5, Abiah4, John3, Lieut. Jonathan2, Benjamin1) m. and rem. to N. Y. state. Little is known regarding his life and family.
He had: i. John W.7 who was a lawyer and res. in Saratoga, N. Y. in 1866.
10. EBENEZER1 CRAIN (ancestry unknown) b. 1780 (?), d. S. June 23, 1863. There is some reason to believe he was of Alstead and connected with the Crain family of that town. In 1809 he was living in S. and had his tax abated; in 1828 he was living on or near the Major Grant farm No. 187. In his old age he came to live with his son Gilbert at No. 186. On the day of his d. he took a walk up the road towards the Grant farm and had started on his return when he sat down to rest and expired; his d. actually took place in the edge of Walpole. He m. CRANDALL
EDWARD, JOHN and HENRY CRANDALL, three brothers from Wales, landed in Boston in 1634 or '35. The name originally was spelt "Cram Dell," meaning in Welsh Iron-dell. The brothers settled in Providence; Edward be- came a mechanic while the other two were seamen.
1. EDWARD1 CRANDALL, one of their descendants arrived in S. as early as 1783. Two of his ch. b. prior to this date are recorded in S. He may have moved here from Alstead. He d. or rem. from town between 1790 and 1800. He m. Mary (Molly-Polly) , b. 1756; d. in S. Apr. 28, 1805, while under the medical care of Dr. Samuel Thomson, q. v. Ch. b .:
i. PHEBEª b. (Springfield ?) Aug. 14, 1777; d. S. Apr. 24, 1853, unm. She was mentally deficient and a "town charge" for over a half a cen- tury. For many years her maintenance was annually sold in town meeting to the lowest bidder. In her old age she lived at No. 33 and occupied the garret.

1. A young lad who went by the name of "TEAGUE' CREHORE" appeared in Dorchester, Mass., before 1650. There is a tradition in the family that he

had been abducted from his home and brought to America when a small child. He settled at Milton, Mass., where he d. Jan. 3, 1695 aged 55 years according to the records of that town. He m. about 1665, Mary -, said to have been the dau of Robert Spurr of Dorchester.
2. TIMOTHY2 CREHORE b. Milton Oct. 18, 1666; d. there Aug. 15, 1739; m. Feb. 10, 1688 Ruth Riol (or Royal) of Dorchester. She d. June 27, 1750 aged 81 years.
3. TIMOTHY CREHORE, Jr. b. Dec. 3, 1689; d. Milton Dec. 26, 1755; a deacon; m. Dec. 24, 1712 Mary Trescot of Dorchester.
4. WILLIAM' Crehore b. Milton Jan. 21, 1731; d. July 9, 1803; m. Ann Bowen of Milton who d. Mar. 24, 1797, aged 70 years. (Ann may have d. in Walpole Apr. 13, 1813; 79 years).
5. EBENEZERE CREHORE b. Milton (?) Feb. 18, 1764; d. Walpole, N. H., Sept. 23, 1819. He rem. from Milton to Walpole as early as 1780; his farm was on "Carpenter Hill" in the S. E. part of that town; a mechanic before he came to Walpole. With a foot-power lathe he did all the turning for the pews of the old meeting-house built in 1789. His original 50 acres was in- creased until he was a large landholder in Walpole. He m. 17- Hannah Davenport, b. May 9, 1764; d. Walpole Oct. 5, 1835.

6. GEORGE® CREHORE (Ebenezer5, William4, Dea. Timothy3, Timothy2, Teague1) worked on his father's farm in Walpole, drove a four and six horse team from there to Boston carrying down produce and returning with gro- ceries, etc. On Jan. 1, 1827 he m. Clarinda Harvey, b. Dec. 8, 1801, dau. of Asahel Harvey, q. v., and immediately settled at No. 24, where they lived for 38 years. He was a great worker, an energetic, entrprising, successful farmer.
In 1856 he introduced the first mowing-machine into S., known as the "Ketcham" machine, having one large driving wheel and a rigid cutter-bar which dragged on the ground. The first day he used the machine the people came to see if it was possible for horses to cut grass. He also bought the first wheel horse rake used in town. From time to time he added more meadow and pasture land to the original farm, until he was able to keep 40 head of cattle, 100 sheep and a lot of horses, some of which were sold for the cavalry in the Civil war. He was selectman in 1837 and representative in the state legislature in 1843.
His wife before her marriage was a member of the choir at the old meeting house (Town Hall), attending regularly two services each Sunday before there was any stoves in use for heating buildings except foot-stoves.
