He then learned the shoemaker's trade at Hills- boro and rem. to Francestown where he remained seven years and carried on the shoemaker's business, together with that of tanning and currying leather. He then returned to Hillsboro Lower Village, where he established the same business, and carried it on until his death. ELIJAH' FULLER (Levis, Joshua7, Samuel®, Barnabas®, Samuel‘, Samuel3, Edward“, Robert1) was educated for the sea, but one trip was suffi- cient and turned him in another direction; was a fine mathematician; for many years he was Captain in the militia; was in command of a company in the war of 1812 but was not called into active service. He opened a store.at No. 78 as early as 1814 and later was in company with William Baxter, as "traders." He was moderator 1819, 20; town treasurer 1814, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; state representative 1818. During this session the bill was passed separating Church from State in New Hampshire. Just before the vote was taken, Eli- jah's old minister, Rev. Perley Howe, q. v., called on him and with tears in his eyes, besought him not to vote to starve the ministers. Mr. Fuller replied that the ministers must look to voluntary contribution for support. He ap- pears to have lived in Leyden, Mass., in 1810, then returned to S. where he remained until about 1823 when he rem. to Wellsboro, Tioga Co., Penn., and thence to West Union, Iowa, about 1870. 19. Dr. NOAH FULLER (Josiah', Robert3, Jonathan2, Robert1) b. Wren- tham, Mass., Mar. 28, 1738/9; d. Westmoreland Apr. 30, 1809, much respected and where he had held many positions of trust and responsibility. In 1779 he rem. from Wrentham to No. 197 in the edge of Westmoreland where he was a farmer and practiced his profession. His farm contained 100 acres was in east part of Westmoreland and near Surry line, where he built a log house. He was taxed in S. 1797. Both he and his wife are buried in S. W. Cemetery. See map. The Dr. Samuel Thomson of Surry says, "When I was sixteen years of age I heard my parents say, that as my mind was so much taken up in roots and herbs, they thought it best to send me to live with Dr. Fuller of West- moreland, who was called a root doctor. But as I was needed on the farm, I was much disappointed not to go." This was in the year 1785. Dr. Fuller m. (1) Sept. (or Oct.) 30, 1760, Dorothy Hunt, b. Jan. 17, 1743; d. Aug. 16, 1762. He m. 4. Major DANIEL GAY (Abner-, John1) b. Stoddard Sept. 22, 1813; d. Ac- worth Dec. 9, 1884. He was Major in the 16th Reg., 5th Brigade, 3d Division, N. H. militia, from which he was, at his own request, discharged, June 18, 1841. He m. in Acworth Mar. 23, 1837, Mary Ann Symonds, b. Oct. 23, 1815; d. Keene Jan. 30, 1896, dau. of Sargent and Sarah (Gould) Symonds of Ac- worth. He settled in Acworth 1831. The first of their six ch. was:
5. JOHN P.' GAY (Maj. Daniel3, Abner", John1) b. Acworth Dec. 25, 1838; res. (1921) Keene. Has lived in Marlboro, S. Keene, Wilton, and Cambridge, Mass. From the latter town he enl. Sept. 10, 1862, as a private in Co. H, 5th Mass. Regt., for nine months in the Civil war, q. v. He m. in Acworth July 13, 1864, Lois Maria Scripture, b. Nelson Jan. 5, 1843; d. Keene Mar. 19, 1917, dau. of Charles and Abigail (Priest) Scripture, q. v.
Mr. and Mrs. Gay celebrated their golden wedding in Keene July 13, 1914. He moved from Marlboro to No. 149 in S. in the fall of 1868, and entered into partnership with Harrison N. Scripture at the Mill, No. 112. They not only got out lumber, and ran a grist mill, but put in new machinery and got out clothes pins, giving employment to several men. He remained in town about four years, the latter part of time living at No. 104.

1.CHARLES H.1 GEORGE came from Brimfield, Mass., 1918, and kept the village store in Town Hall a year or two; then rem. to Claremont and was engaged in the real estate business, from there he went to Springfield, Mass., and while in the employ of the Gas Co. (?) in that city was accidentally killed by a fellow workman, about 1920. While here he lived at No. 64. He m.

3. Capt. SAMUEL3 GILBERT of "Paukwonk ?", Lyme, Colchester, now Salem, Conn .; b. Aug. 5, 1664; d. Aug. 5, 1733. He m. Mary Rogers, b. Apr. 1667; d. Sept. 30, 1756, dau. of Samuel and Mary (Stanton) Rogers of New London, Conn.
4. SAMUEL GILBERT b. Feb. 5, 1687/8; d. . He m. 1706, Mercy Warner. Died Hebron, Conn., May 1, 1760.
5. SAMUEL GILBERT (Samuel+, Capt. Samuel3, Jonathan2, Thomas1) b. Lebanon, Conn., Mar. (or May) 1, 1712; d. Oct. 16, 1774 at Lyme, N. H., leav- ing an estate of over £5000 to be equally divided between his six children. His will is on file at the State Library, Hartford, Conn., and mentions land in Hebron, Conn., Thetford, Vt., "Gilfem" (Gilsum) and Lyme, N. H. He was one of the most potent factors in the settlement of Gilsum, although it is not known he ever came here to live. "Tradition says there was a dispute

whether the town should be called Gilbert or Sumner. Rev. Clement Sumner, of Keene, was the son of Thomas Sumner, and had married Elizabeth, daugh- ter of Samuel Gilbert. Possibly this family connection led to the compromise by which the first syllable of each name was taken to form the unique name of Gil-Sum."-from Gilsum History, p. 19. He was of Hebron, Conn .; a cap- tain, and probably served as such in the French and Indian war; at death he was called "Colonel." On May 1, 1761, "Samuel Gilburd Esqr. Josiah Kil- burn Tanner Thomas Sumner Gent, all of Hebron in the County of Hartford & Jonathan Smith of Bolton Husbandman In the County aforesd & Joseph Mack of Lime in the County of Newton and all of the Colleney of Connecti- cut" purchased of Benjamin Bellows of Walpole, "fifty Nine Rights or Shares of land in the Township of Boyle In the Provn of New Hamps. which sd fifty Nine Rights is to Contain Eighteen thousand acres" for which they paid £1350 lawful money. His name heads the list of "Grantees of the Township of Gil- sum." He was a land speculator on a large scale, and was one of the leaders in securing the grant of Newton, now Alstead. He m. (1) Elizabeth Curtis who soon d .; m. (2) May 22, 1740, Abigail Rowley b. Feb. 13, 1716; d. , dau. of Dea. Samuel and Elizabeth (Fuller) Rowley. They rem. to Lyme, N. H., about 1771.

7 JOHN GILBERT b. Bridgewater, England, about 1583; came to Ameri- ca with his (2) wife and ch .; settled in Dorchester, Mass .; rem. to Taunton where he was an original proprietor; d. prior to 1654. He and Henry An- drews were the two first representatives from Taunton to the General Court in 1639. He m. (1) 1602, perhaps, Mary, the widow of Nicholas Street or Strait; m. (2) in England, Mrs. Winefred Peasley who survived him.
