6. JONATHAN® HUMPHREY b. N. Cohasset, Mass., July 29, 1764; d. Aug. 2, 1836; m. Dec. 20, 1786 Rebecca Vinal of Scituate, Mass., b. Aug. 16, 1764. He was a Rev. soldier at 17 years of age in 1781, and patroled the coast of Nantasket one winter and for a bounty received a coat from the Gov- ernment. The eldest of their eleven ch. was:


7. Capt. THOMAS HUMPHREY (Jonathan®, Micah5, Thomas4, George3, Thomas", and John1 ?) b. N. Cohasset, Mass., Feb. 25, 1788; d. S. Jan. 16, 1832. He was a mariner as was his father, and went to sea early in life: While still a young man he became captain of a sailing vessel; went on sev- eral voyages to Brazil; to China where he spent six years, and twice circled the globe. He arrived at New Orleans during the war of 1812 where he left his vessel and by riding horse-back and walking reached Boston where he remained till peace was declared. Having accumulated a fortune for those days, his wife to keep him from the sea, purchased about 1822 a farm in S .; No. 68, where he lived until d .; the burial was at Cohasset. He kept tavern in S. and bought pew No. 23 in the meeting house, Feb. 7, 1822. His longing to return to sea never ceased. He m. June 20, 1812 Sally Sprague, b. S. Hing- ham, Mass., Feb. 15, 1788; d. Roxbury, Mass., Mar. 1, 1879, dau. of Jacob and Sprague; a descendant of Jacob Sprague, a "minute-man" at Lex- ington. His wife descends from Richard Warren of the Mayflower. Capt. Humphrey had five or six brothers who were sea-captains.

3. SIMEON' INGALLS came from Alstead to S. about 1814; taxed 1815; rem. to Gilsum where he lived two or more years. He m. S. Nov. 22, 1814 Rhoda Smith, dau. of Thomas Smith, Jr., q. v.


4. JOSEPH' INGALLS of Rockingham, Vt., came to S. about 1821; rem. but returned again 1825, and left a second time, 1830/1. He lived at No. 138 few years; m. 18-, Rodentha Perigo Ripley, b. about 1791; d. S. Apr. 13, 1864.

5. JAMES' INGALLS of Walpole was m. in S. Nov. 25, 1802 to Margaret (Peggy) Baxter, dau. of Capt. Simon Baxter, q. v .; res. Alstead and at Watertown, Jefferson Co., N. Y., in 1817. Upon the d. of Capt. Baxter he returned and lived at No. 24 in S. until 1822, from which date we have no further knowledge.

1. WILLIAM'INGERSON lived at No. 44, 1916/17; rem. to Alstead. He m. and had a dau. Ruth b. about 1908. They came from Hinsdale (?); rem. to Alstead.


INGRAHAM


1. JEREMIAH1 INGRAHAM and wife, Zilpha, were "warned out" in 1794. He remained, however; was taxed 1795; rem. to Gilsum where he paid tax 1796-7, then returned to S. 1798, n. f. r. He lived in s. w. part of town, at or near No. 190. He was called a "doctor." .


2. ELIPHALET INGRAHAM, probably related to above, taxed in S. 1795 or '96.

The progenitor of this family was Roger de Isleam, a benefactor of the church at Northampton, England.

JOHN' ISHAM (Isum) of Northamptonshire, England, supposed to be the ancestor of all the Ishum's in America, except those who settled in Vir- ginia, came to Massachusetts, and settled at Barnstable in 1670, and where he d. Sept. 3, 1713. He m. Dec. 16, 1677 Jane Parker, b. Mar. 21, 1664; d. 1719.


2. ISAAC' ISHAM b. Feb. 7, 1682/3. (It is possible this date should be ten years later, thus: 1692/3.) He m. May 3, 1716 Thankful (or Abigail) Lumbert. His will, probated Aug. 5, 1771, mentions wife Abigail.
