Henry Willard d. 1701, s of Maj. Simon Willard the celebrated Indian hunter of Concord. Henry and Dorcas had several ch. one of whom was Col. Samuel Willard.


3. COL. BENJAMIN3 BELLOWS (s. of Benjamin2 & Dorcas) b. Lancas- ter, Mass., May 26, 1712; d. in Walpole, N. H., July 10, 1777. He is under- stood to have been the second settler, and "Founder of Walpole." A man of unusual intellect and business capacity who wielded more influence over this part of New Hampshire in his day and generation than any other one man. At one time he owned 18,000 acres of land in what is now S. and Gilsum. On Aug. 14, 1761 Col. Benjamin Bellows issued the first call of a Proprietors meeting at the house of Peter Hayward, No. 1, at which time he was one of "his Majesty's Justices of the Peace," in the Province of New Hampshire. He settled in Walpole in 1752 or '53; m. (1) Oct. 7, 1735 Abigail Stearns, b. Watertown, Mass., June 2 or 3, 1708; d. Walpole Nov. 9, 1757; m. (2) Apr. 21, 1758 Mrs. Mary (Hubbard) Jennison, b. Groton, Mass., Apr. 12, 1725; d. Walpole Feb. 21, 1794, dau. of Jonathan and Rebecca (Brown) Hubbard and widow of John Jennison of Lunenburg, Mass.

5. SALMON BELLOWS (Joseph4, Col. Benjamin3, Benjamin2, John1), b. Lunenburg, Mass., Sept. 9, 1766; d. at Ashtabula, O., Mar. 20, 1852. He moved to Walpole with his parents in 1786, and later kept a ferry across Connecticut river 34 of a mile below Walpole village, and lived in a small house on its banks. He moved to No. 33 in S. about 1811; and on May 22, 1814 was ad- mitted to S. church by letter from Walpole. He was dismissed and joined the church in Langdon, Feb. 13, 1820. July 23, 1811 the town of S. paid him $9.50 for providing for Dinah Armstrong for 26 weeks. It is said, "he was strictly temperate, of an intelligent mind and amiable disposition, but so un- worldly and so contented with the present that he took little thought for the morrow"; as an example, he never had a woodpile, but every day drew and cut up enough for the day's supply. He m. Sept. 25, 1791 Lydia Cox of Har- vard, Mass., who d. at Ashtabula July 3, 1844, aged 73 years. While in Lang- don he lived on the "Hartwell farm" (in more recent years owned by the El- well family) which was not far from Drewsville village. About 1825 he rem. to Westport, N. Y .; thence to Ohio in 1834, and finally about 1839 he and his dau. Mary settled in Ashtabula, Ohio.

He was a farmer; s. of Israel and Frances (Allen) Wightman of Walpole. Soon after their m. they moved to Westport, N. Y., on the shore of Lake Champlain; 1834 rem. farther West with their children. He m. (2) about 1842, and d. at Saybrook May 12, 1865. They had b. i. Francis7. ii. Mary Maria. iii. Francis Dana. iv. Fannie Isabel. v. George Allen. All b. be- tween 1821 and 1831, and except the oldest, at Westport. By his (2) m. he had a dau. Clara7.


6. BENJAMIN5 BELLOWS (Joseph', Col. Benjamin3, Benjamin2, John1) a brother of Salmon, above, is supposed to have been the man of that name who was living in S. in 1811. Both were taxed that year for land, buildings and stock. Benjamin rem. soon after-family record not traced.


There was a Joseph4 Bellows of Walpole and a John" Bellows of Boston who had an interest in farm No. 33 while Salmon5 was living there-possibly his father' and brother5.


George5 Bellows and Clarissa Bellows, both of Charlestown were m. in S. Sept. 12, 1813. He was b. Jan. 31, 1784, s. of Theodore and gr-s of Col. Ben- jamin3 and Mary (Jennison) Bellows of Walpole.

1. JOSEPH1 BEMIS, b. in Eng. 1619, came to America and was a res. of Watertown, Mass., as early as 1640, was selectman, 1648, 1672 and '75; d. Aug. 7, 1684. By w. Sarah had nine ch., one of whom was Joseph2, Jr. b. Dec. 12, 1651.


Philip3 Bemis perhaps a gr-s. of Joseph1 the emigrant settled in Westmin- ster, Mass. He m. Elizabeth Lawrence, by whom he had six ch. Zaccheust, the youngest, bap. July 25, 1736; m. Elizabeth Lyon of Westminster. They had 8 ch. Zaccheus"; Polly, b. 1762; m. John Cole and settled in S. q. v. Betsey; Philip; Stephen, b. 1768. Lydia; Mercy and William.


2. STEPHEN® BEMIS, (Zaccheus4, Philip3, Joseph2, and perhaps Joseph1) b. Westminster Mar. 16, 1768; d. July 18, 1841; m. (1) Dolly Ross by whom he had two ch. when she d. He m. (2) Nov. 17, 1796, Achsah Pollard and she was mother of ten more ch .; all b. in Westminster and Ashburnham. Nov. 3, 1806 he bought No. 186 and sold to Jonas Pollard, 1811, probably a kindred of Mrs. Bemis. If the family ever lived in town it was of short duration.


The line of descent of another branch of the family is as follows:

4. CHARLES R.1 BEMIS a single man came to S. from Keene about 1885; working at the village hotel stable. Little can be learned of him, but he is supposed to be identical with the man of that name who served from Temple in Civil war. "Died in Surry Dec. 8, 1861, Eliza Bemis, wife of Charles Bemis, aged 29 y., 5 mos., and 11 days." K. S. item. She may have been wife of the above Charles R. While in S. he lived at No. 124 and ran the shop No. 128. Without doubt he was the man of that name mentioned in G. H., page 141, 226 and 230. Possibly he was

7. GEORGE M.2 BIGELOW, b. Chester, Vt .; d. Wells River, Vt. about 1885. He m. Priscilla Hull b. Potton, Canada (a town 15 miles from New- port, Vt.) ; d. at Plymouth. The father1 of Mr. Bigelow is said to have come from England and lived at Bebee Plains, Canada from where he moved to Chester, Vt.


8. HIRAM PHILEMON3 BIGELOW (George M.2) b. at Gilmanton Iron Works, May 24, 1849; res. 1920, Keene. He enlisted in Civil war at Burling- ton, Vt., Feb. 11, 1865,-when less than 16 years of age-being credited to Moretown. He was discharged June 28, 1865 at which time his name was ac- cidentally written "Hiram" in place of Horace, his true name, and which he held until about the time he applied for a U. S. pension. For years the axe was his chief weapon, and "when I was a young man I had no trouble in put- ting up my three cords of wood in a day." From Keene he came to S. about 1871, living while here at Nos. 172, 81 and 35; in 1873 he settled in Acworth. Since that time he has lived at Dorchester, Unity, Hopkinton, Swanzey, Keene, Surry, St. Johnbury, Vt., and Peacham, Vt., and Canada. In 1890 was at No. 240, and at No. 7 in 1895 (?).


It appears his (1) m. 1870 (?) was illegal, she having a husband then living. He next m. Mrs. Mary Ann (Howe) Buckland b. 1834, Hopkinton, N. H .; d. Swanzey 1902 (?); widow of Alexander Buckland by whom she had four ch. He next m. June 30, 1903, Ellen F. Cantlin, b. Winchester, N. H., July 14, 1859; dau. of Michael and Mary (Cunningham) Cantlin.

He res. in Pawlet, Vt., about 1838; in Sullivan 1842-43; then at Nelson and rem. to S. during May 1866 and remained a year or two living at No. 67. Possessing an inventive turn of mind he not only procured several U. S. patents but is understood to have had the honor of making the first basket, or split-seat chairs in America. The first chairs were made in Pawlet about 1838, "where he found out, perhaps from Indian basket makers, how to make the splints from ash logs." While in this town he made chairs in the lower story in the present Town Hall. He m.

2. JAMES H.1 BINGHAM, b. Lempster Apr. 11, 1781; d. Washington, D. C., Mar. 31, 1859; a graduate from Dartmouth College 1801, a classmate of Hon. Daniel Webster; a lawyer and commenced his practice in Alstead; rem. to Claremont 1826 where he was cashier of the 1st Claremont bank; town clerk, 1828-'38; rep. in the N. H. legislature, 1840-1. Subsequently he was for many years clerk in the treasury department at Washington. In 1826 he became associated with Asa Wentworth, Jr., in "the fulling mill" in S. and which he relinquished in 1829. He probably never lived in town.
