He was of S. in 1800; rem. to Chesterfield, but returned to S. in his old age. His gr-dau .* says he ran away from home when about 15 years of age on account of a step- father, and went to live with an uncle in Chesterfield. He m. S. 17. BRADLEY BRITTON (Salmon“, David5, Ebenezer4, William3, William2, James1) a farmer, physically probably the most powerful man that ever lived in S. On one occasion he raised a cart load of potatoes from the ground by placing his body under the cart axle. A stage team getting in a snow drift in Walpole hills, he told the driver to take off his horses, and Mr. Britton is said to have pulled the load through the drift. He went to live with Robert Brit- ton when seven years of age and attended school but little after that date. At nine he carried on a sugar orchard, doing all the work himself. After his m. he carried on the Maj. Grant farm, No. 187, several years. He settled at No. 83 about 1845, then rem. to 68, and in 1859 built and rem. to No. 71. He served as selectman several years. 27. GEORGE WASHINGTON& BRITTON (Bradley7, Salmone, David5, Ebenezer', William3, William2, James1) "one of Newport's most influential and respected citizens." His early life was spent in S., continuing his education at Powers institute, Bernardston, Mass., and at Dartmouth college, then he was engaged in teaching for several years. He then entered mercantile pur- suits in this town in company with E. A. Kenyon. In 1875 they removed to Newport where they were in the dry good business, and later he was in com- pany with E. M. Wiggins in the meat and grocery business. About 1878 he entered the employ of the Warder, Bushnell & Glessner Co., Springfield, Ohio, as their New England agent. He rem. about 1885 to Concord, N. H., where in company with a Mr. Scribner, under the firm name of "Scribner & Britton"
